IIT Madras JRF Civil Engineering Recruitment 2026: Overview

The Office of Industrial Consultancy and Sponsored Research (IC&SR), Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) is hiring Junior Research Fellows (JRF) for the Department of Civil Engineering under advertisement ICSR/PR/Advt.220/2026. The work is coordinated by Prof. Balaji Narasimhan and sits on the water side of civil engineering: hydrology, hydraulics, water resources and irrigation.

This is a contract research post at the Chennai campus, not a permanent institute job. It suits you if you hold a master's in a water-related engineering specialisation and have worked with GIS tools, field hydrology or hydrologic models such as HEC-RAS, HEC-HMS, SWMM or Mike+. You do not need GATE if you clear the national-level selection process IIT Madras runs for this advertisement.

Service Conditions and Caveats

• Contract only: All positions are purely on contract. Finishing the contract gives you no right to an extension, regularisation or a permanent job at IIT Madras.
• Tenure: You are first engaged for six months, and the term can be extended based on your performance.
• GATE or IIT Madras test: You need a GATE pass, or you must clear the national-level selection process IIT Madras conducts for this announcement.
• Citizenship: Only Indian citizens can apply. Migrants from Pakistan who intend to settle in India and subjects of Nepal need an eligibility certificate from the Government of India.
• Current IIT Madras project staff: Apply through proper channel or bring a No-Objection Certificate; without the NOC you will not be allowed into the test or interview.
• Eligibility cut-off: Every eligibility condition is judged as on the closing date of the online application, and only experience gained after your qualifying degree counts.
• Shortlisting: IIT Madras may call only a limited number of candidates based on qualifications and experience above the minimum, and only shortlisted applicants are contacted.
• Women candidates: The institute aims for gender balance and encourages women to apply.
