IIT Madras Project Consultant Recruitment 2026: Overview

Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) is hiring a Project Consultant for its Department of Humanities and Social Sciences under advertisement Advt.224/2026, released through the Office of Industrial Consultancy and Sponsored Research (IC&SR). The job belongs to the research project “Social Media and Gen AI Safety in India: Youth and Parent Perspectives from Four States”, funded by the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), New Delhi, and coordinated by Prof. Mathangi Krishnamurthy.

In practice this is the project’s Research Manager role. You will run the household survey day to day alongside an empanelled survey firm — from translating and testing the questionnaires to training enumerators and checking field quality. It suits someone who has spent years managing field surveys, research teams and the logistics that go with them.

Service Conditions and Caveats

• Contract only: The post is purely contractual. Finishing the contract gives you no claim to an extension, regularisation or a permanent job at the institute.
• Tenure: The engagement runs for one year at first and can be extended depending on your performance.
• Citizenship: You must be an Indian citizen. Subjects of Nepal and people who migrated from Pakistan to settle permanently in India can also apply, but they need an eligibility certificate from the Ministry of Home Affairs before appointment.
• Which experience counts: Only relevant experience gained after your minimum qualifying degree is considered. The institute may relax the qualification or experience for exceptionally outstanding candidates, and may relax experience for SC/ST candidates at its discretion.
• Current IIT Madras project staff: Apply through proper channel or bring a No-Objection Certificate — without the NOC you will not be allowed into the test or interview.
• Shortlisting: The institute may limit how many people it calls for a test or interview, based on qualifications and experience above the minimum. Only shortlisted applicants are contacted.
• Eligibility cut-off: Every eligibility condition is judged as on the closing date of the online application.
• Women candidates: The institute aims for a gender-balanced workforce and encourages women to apply.

Application Submission Notes

Apply only through the IC&SR careers portal and choose Advt.224/2026 from the list of openings. The portal takes one application per login email for each advertisement, so if you want more than one position under the same advert, select them all before you submit — a submitted form cannot be edited or taken back.

• Lead daily survey operations as the project's Research Manager and act as the main contact with the empanelled survey firm
• Agree work plans, field deployment schedules and reporting formats with the firm, and hold it to the agreed timelines and deliverables
• Coordinate translation, back-translation and field-readiness of the survey tools, including testing the digital (CAPI) questionnaire and its skip logic
• Organise and document soft tests, pretests and pilots, and feed the learnings back into instrument revisions
• Oversee enumerator training on matched youth–parent instruments, consent and interviewing adolescents on sensitive topics
• Monitor the sampling protocol and the ethics, consent and data-confidentiality safeguards in the field, together with the Research Scientist II
• Review incoming survey data for completeness and consistency, and send weekly field updates to the research leadership
• Supervise the Research Associate and the field tasks given to the Research Intern
