IIT ISM Dhanbad Counselling Intern Recruitment 2026: Overview

Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad, known as IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, is engaging Counselling Interns on contract to support the mental health and well-being of its students. You will work alongside the institute's existing counsellors, giving individual and group counselling, running wellness workshops and helping students deal with stress, anxiety and academic pressure.

The engagement is for one year at first and can be renewed for one more year if your work is rated satisfactory. It is meant for recent postgraduates: your Master's degree must have been completed within the two years before the advertisement date. Think of it as a hands-on first step into campus counselling rather than a senior role.

Service Conditions and Caveats

  • Purely contractual: The engagement gives you no right or claim to a regular post at IIT (ISM) Dhanbad.
  • Working week: Six days a week, up to 48 hours. You may be asked to work on Sundays, gazetted holidays or beyond normal hours in an emergency, with no extra pay.
  • Consolidated pay only: No other facility or allowance is given on top of the monthly amount; a 3% increment applies only if the contract is extended for a second year.
  • Leave: You earn 2.5 days of leave per month, up to 30 days a year. Unused leave does not carry forward into an extension and is not paid out at the end.
  • Reporting: You report for duty through the working Counsellor and must tell the institute in writing, well in advance, before any leave or outstation trip.
  • Notice period: Either side can end the engagement with one month's notice or pay in place of notice; the institute can also end it if your work is not satisfactory.
  • Nationality and jurisdiction: Only Indian nationals can apply, and any dispute falls under the courts at Dhanbad.

Application Submission Notes

Fill in the prescribed application form attached to the advertisement and email it to recruitment_nonfaculty@iitism.ac.in. Attach one single PDF holding proof of all your educational qualifications and experience, and give a working mobile number and email address in the form.

Late emails are normally rejected, though the institute may still allow you to the interview in exceptional cases with a justified reason. The interview is held at the Health Centre, IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, with reporting at 9:00 AM. Bring your original certificates for verification, and note that no TA/DA is paid for attending.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct initial interviews and mental health screenings for students
  • Provide short-term individual and group counselling, in person and online, under supervision
  • Help students handle stress, anxiety, academic pressure, adjustment and relationship issues
  • Identify cases that need psychiatric or clinical help and assist counsellors with crisis intervention and triage
  • Design and run workshops on stress management, academic anxiety and mental health awareness
  • Run peer support groups and institute wellness campaigns
  • Keep timely, accurate and strictly confidential case notes and counselling records
  • Coordinate with designated institute officials while following professional and ethical standards
