IIT (ISM) Dhanbad has released a notification for 30 Assistant Professor (Grade-I/II) posts spread across 17 departments, including Applied Geology, Applied Geophysics, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Computer Science and Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mining Engineering, Petroleum Engineering, Physics, and more. Each department has its own specialization areas and publication requirements, listed in a detailed department-wise annexure attached to the notification. Ph.D. holders with a strong research or teaching record can apply for either Grade-I (more experienced, regular) or Grade-II depending on how many years of post-Ph.D. experience they have. Who Can Apply?

For Assistant Professor Grade-II (Level 10 - Rs. 70,900/month):

• You need a Ph.D. with first class or equivalent in a relevant subject, with a consistently good academic record.
• You should have less than 3 years of post-Ph.D. industrial, research, or teaching experience.

For Assistant Professor Grade-I (Level 12 - Rs. 1,01,500/month):

• You need a Ph.D. with first class or equivalent, with at least 3 years of post-Ph.D. industrial, research, or teaching experience.

Every department has its own specific publication and specialization requirements. For example, Computer Science & Engineering candidates need at least 2 (Grade-II) or 4 (Grade-I) publications in Q1/Q2-indexed journals, while Mining Engineering candidates need a 4-year Bachelor's degree in Mining Engineering along with a matching publication record. Indian Nationals, Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs), Overseas Citizens of India (OCIs), and foreign nationals can all apply. Foreign nationals without an Indian passport or PIO/OCI card can be offered a contractual appointment for up to 5 years, renewable thereafter.

Age Limit

• The age limit for a UR candidate is preferably below 35 years.
• Age Relaxation: Applicable for OBC, SC/ST, and PwD candidates as per government norms.
• The cut-off date for age, qualification, and category certificates is the closing date of the advertisement, 31 August 2026.

Salary

• Assistant Professor Grade-II: 7th CPC Pay Level 10, minimum basic pay Rs. 70,900 per month (approx. total emoluments Rs. 1,49,262 including HRA).
• Assistant Professor Grade-I: 7th CPC Pay Level 12, minimum basic pay Rs. 1,01,500 per month (approx. total emoluments Rs. 2,11,196 including HRA).
• You will also get DA, HRA, and Transport Allowance, plus a Professional Development Allowance of Rs. 3 lakh every 3 years, research support grants of up to Rs. 20-100 lakh, and Children Education Allowance of Rs. 33,750 per child per year (for up to 2 children).
• New faculty can also access a Faculty Research Scheme grant of up to Rs. 20 lakh, Special Financial Support of Rs. 30 lakh to set up a lab, relocation reimbursement of up to Rs. 1.25 lakh, on-campus transit accommodation, and sabbatical leave for international research collaborations.

Selection Process (No Written Exam)

The selection will be done through:

1. Screening of Applications: Shortlisting is based on your qualification, publication record, and academic/professional experience.
2. Departmental Interaction / Interview: Shortlisted candidates are called for an interview by the Selection Committee.
3. Document Verification

Just meeting the minimum qualification does not guarantee an interview call — the Institute can restrict the number of candidates called based on higher qualifications and stronger academic achievements.
