IIFT Legal Officer Recruitment 2026: Overview

Indian Institute of Foreign Trade (IIFT), a deemed university and business school set up by the Department of Commerce, Government of India, wants an experienced law graduate to run its in-house legal work as Legal Officer at the New Delhi campus. This is a contract engagement, not a regular post, so it suits a working legal professional who already handles service, labour and land matters for a government body, PSU, university or similar institution.

The role sits close to the institute's senior management. You would build a legal compliance system for IIFT, prepare the institute's replies in court cases, keep RTI and RPWD Act compliance on track, and support internal bodies such as the Internal Complaints Committee (ICC), the SC/ST Cell and the Grievances Committee. Vetting MoUs, agreements and contracts and working with outside advocates are also part of the job.

Service Conditions and Caveats

  • Tenure: The first engagement is for one year. It can be extended based on your performance and the institute's needs, but the total engagement cannot go beyond four years.
  • No regular appointment: The contract gives you no right or claim to a regular job at IIFT.
  • Pay depends on profile: The consolidated pay is fixed according to your experience and qualifications, and IIFT says a higher amount may be offered to a deserving candidate.
  • Immediate joining: If selected, you must join duty immediately after you receive the offer.
  • Shortlisting: Meeting the qualification and experience conditions does not guarantee a call. If many people apply, IIFT can shortlist in any way it finds suitable and will not explain rejections.
  • Post may not be filled: IIFT can increase, reduce or leave the post unfilled, and the selection committee's decision is final.
  • Language: You need an excellent command of English; working knowledge of Hindi is an advantage.

Application Submission Notes

Applications are accepted only through IIFT's online form for this post; there is no postal or email route. IIFT says candidates without the required experience or qualification need not apply.

Only shortlisted candidates will get an email calling them for the written test or interaction at IIFT Campus, B-21, Qutab Institutional Area, New Delhi 110016. IIFT will not respond to queries about postal delays, the conduct or result of the interaction, or why someone was not called.

Responsibilities

  • Build and run a legal compliance system to prevent and address breaches of civil laws and employee service rules
  • Handle the institute's cases before courts and quasi-judicial bodies, including para-wise comments on court and grievance matters
  • Make sure RTI requests and duties under laws such as the RPWD Act are handled on time
  • Support the ICC, SC/ST Cell and Grievances Committee on legal points
  • Work with external advocates and update senior management on pending cases
  • Advise on institutional issues, including how regulations, rules, policies and procedures apply
  • Vet MoUs, agreements and contracts
