Postings are at CSIR-CMERI Durgapur and its extension centre, the Centre of Excellence for Farm Machinery at Ludhiana. Who Can Apply?

  • Qualification: You need 10th/SSC pass with Science subjects (minimum 55% marks) and an ITI certificate or National/State Trade Certificate in the relevant trade (Fitter, Electrician, Electronics Mechanic, Machinist, Foundryman, Motor Vehicle Mechanic, or Refrigeration & AC) from a recognized institution.
  • Alternative route 1: 10th/SSC pass with Science subjects (55% marks) plus 2 years' full-time experience as an apprentice trainee in the relevant trade.
  • Alternative route 2: 10th/SSC pass with Science subjects (55% marks) plus 3 years of work experience in the relevant trade in a Ministry, Department, PSU, or Autonomous Body under the Government of India or a State/UT.
  • Citizenship: You must be an Indian citizen.

Age Limit

  • You should be between 18 and 28 years old as on the closing date of online application, i.e. 3 August 2026.
  • Age Relaxation: SC/ST candidates get 5 years, OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) candidates get 3 years, PwBD (Unreserved) get 10 years, PwBD (OBC) get 13 years, and PwBD (SC/ST) get 15 years relaxation.
  • Departmental candidates (CSIR Council employee / Government Department / Autonomous Body / PSU employee) get 5 years relaxation for Group C posts.
  • Widows/Divorced Women/Judicially Separated Women (not remarried) can apply up to 35 years (40 years if SC/ST).
  • Ex-Servicemen (Unreserved): 3 years relaxation after deducting actual military service rendered, as per Government of India rules.
  • No age relaxation is allowed to SC/ST/OBC candidates applying against unreserved posts.

Salary

  • Selected candidates will get Pay Level-2 of the 7th Central Pay Commission (Rs. 19,900 to Rs. 63,200), with total emoluments of approximately Rs. 39,000 per month on the minimum of the scale.
  • Total emoluments include Basic Pay, Dearness Allowance (DA), House Rent Allowance (HRA), and Transport Allowance (TA) as admissible to Council employees stationed at Durgapur, West Bengal or Ludhiana, Punjab.
  • You also get benefits like reimbursement of medical expenses, Leave Travel Concession, House Building Advance, and coverage under the National Pension System.

  • General / OBC / EWS (Male candidates): Rs. 500 (non-refundable)
  • Ex-Servicemen / SC / ST / Women / PwBD candidates: No fee
  • Payment mode: Online only through SBI Collect. You must download the e-receipt from SBI Collect and upload it with your application.
  • Fees paid through any other mode will not be accepted and the application will be treated as without fee.

Selection Process

The selection will be done in these stages:

  1. Screening: A Screening Committee will review online applications received within the deadline and shortlist candidates for the Trade Test.
  2. Trade Test: Shortlisted candidates take a qualifying Trade Test in their relevant trade. Only those who qualify move to the written exam.
  3. Competitive Written Examination: An OMR-based or Computer-Based Objective MCQ exam with 150 questions across 3 papers in 2 hours 30 minutes total. Questions are set in English and Hindi (except the English language paper).
    • Paper-I — Mental Ability Test: 50 questions, 100 marks (2 marks each), 1 hour, no negative marking.
    • Paper-II — General Awareness & English Language: 25+25 questions, 75+75 marks (3 marks each), 30 minutes, 1 negative mark per wrong answer.
    • Paper-III — Concerned Subject (trade-based): 50 questions, 150 marks (3 marks each), 1 hour, 1 negative mark per wrong answer.
  4. Merit List: Paper-II and Paper-III are evaluated only for candidates who cross the minimum threshold in Paper-I. The final merit list is based on marks in Paper-II and Paper-III only.

Responsibilities

  • Fit, assemble, and maintain mechanical parts, tools, and equipment as per your assigned trade
  • Install, repair, and maintain electrical, electronic, or refrigeration/AC systems and machinery
  • Read and interpret technical drawings, schematics, and service manuals
  • Operate machine tools such as lathes, milling and grinding machines, or diagnose vehicle and engine faults, depending on trade
  • Assist in R&D project work including proposal preparation, estimation, tender processing, and execution
  • Follow safety practices and handle tools and instruments used in your trade correctly
  • Work in shifts and attend to emergencies at odd hours when required
  • Coordinate with colleagues and other departments during fabrication, testing, and field trials

Eligibility Criteria

Minimum Qualification

10th/SSC pass with Science subjects (minimum 55% marks) and ITI certificate or National/State Trade Certificate in the relevant trade

Preferred Qualification

2 years' apprentice experience or 3 years' work experience in the relevant trade in a Ministry/Department/PSU/Autonomous Body under Government of India or State/UT

Required Skills

Trade-specific technical skills: reading technical drawings, using trade tools and equipment, troubleshooting and repair, basic computer knowledge for some trades

Exam Pattern

The Competitive Written Examination has 150 questions across 3 papers for a total time of 2 hours 30 minutes. It is an OMR-based or Computer-Based Objective MCQ test, set in English and Hindi (except the English language questions), at SSC + ITI/12th standard level.

Subject-wise Breakdown

  • Paper-I — Mental Ability Test (1 hour): 50 questions for 100 marks (2 marks per correct answer). Covers General Intelligence, Quantitative Aptitude, Reasoning, Problem Solving, and Situational Judgement. No negative marking in this paper.
  • Paper-II — General Awareness (30 minutes): 25 questions for 75 marks (3 marks per correct answer).
  • Paper-II — English Language (30 minutes): 25 questions for 75 marks (3 marks per correct answer).
  • Paper-III — Concerned Subject (1 hour): 50 questions for 150 marks (3 marks per correct answer), based on your advertised trade/qualification.

Negative Marking: 1 mark deducted for every wrong answer in Paper-II and Paper-III. No negative marking in Paper-I.

Important: Paper-II and Paper-III are evaluated only if you cross the minimum threshold marks set by the Selection Committee in Paper-I. Your final merit rank depends only on your Paper-II and Paper-III marks.
