National Institute of Ocean Technology (NIOT), Chennai, working under the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES), Government of India, has re-advertised its Post-Doctoral Fellowship (MoES-DOM-PDF) under Advertisement No. NIOT/MoES-DOM-V6/02/2026. NIOT is the technical arm of MoES that develops indigenous technology for ocean resource exploration, and this fellowship funds research talent under Vertical-6 of the Deep Ocean Mission, a national programme covering six thrust areas of ocean science and technology. This particular round covers two research areas — Deep Sea Mining & Underwater Robotics (Vertical 1) with 3 openings, and Deep-sea Biodiversity Exploration & Conservation (Vertical 3) with 1 opening. If you hold a doctorate and want to work under an experienced NIOT scientist-mentor on ocean technology research, this fellowship is for you.

Vacancy Breakdown by Research Vertical

  • Vertical 1 (Deep Sea Mining, Underwater Vehicles & Robotics): 3 posts — focused on developing technologies for deep sea mining, underwater vehicles, and underwater robotics.
  • Vertical 3 (Deep-sea Biodiversity Exploration & Conservation): 1 post — focused on technological innovations for exploring and conserving deep-sea biodiversity.

Note: The number of fellowships may increase if more vacancies arise, subject to approval.

Who Can Apply?

  • Qualification: You need a Doctorate (Ph.D.) in a Science or Engineering discipline from a recognized University or Institution.
  • Mentor Consent: You must get prior consent from your chosen NIOT mentor before applying. Available mentors listed in the notification include Dr. P. Muthuvel (Scientist-G), whose expertise covers design, development and integration of embedded electronics, instrumentation and control systems, and Dr. Tamshuk Choudhury (Scientist-F), whose expertise covers underwater mechanical systems design, materials engineering, solid mechanics, and fracture mechanics — both for Vertical 1.
  • Research Proposal: Your proposed research must match the scope of your chosen DOM Vertical and your mentor's area of expertise.
  • You can submit only one proposal per applicant.

Age Limit

  • Your age should not exceed 35 years as on the closing date for submission of application.
  • Age Relaxation: As per Government of India norms for reserved categories.

Salary

  • You will get a fellowship of Rs. 80,000 per month plus HRA.
  • You will also get a Research Grant of Rs. 2,50,000 per year for your project.
  • National Travel allowance of Rs. 30,000 per year and International Travel allowance of up to Rs. 1,00,000 over 2 years are provided on a case-by-case basis, based on MoES approval.

Selection Process (No Written Exam)

  2. Mentor Approval: Your chosen mentor must be willing to take you on — each mentor can guide a maximum of 2 PDFs at a time under the scheme.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out independent and mentor-guided research under the assigned Deep Ocean Mission vertical
  • Design and conduct experiments related to deep-sea technology or biodiversity research
  • Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and conference proceedings
  • Collaborate with NIOT scientists and mentors on ongoing Deep Ocean Mission projects
  • Prepare technical reports and project documentation as required by MoES
  • Help develop new tools, methods, or technologies for ocean exploration
  • Present research progress and findings during periodic project reviews
