CJH Tihar Senior and Junior Resident Recruitment 2026: Overview

The Office of the Resident Medical Officer, Central Jail Hospital (CJH), Tihar is filling Senior Resident and Junior Resident (MBBS) posts in Delhi Prisons on an ad-hoc basis. These are stop-gap appointments that keep the prison hospitals running until the Centralized Recruitment Committee headed by the Dean of Maulana Azad Medical College (MAMC) fills the posts. You send your application form first, and then attend an interview at the Prison Headquarters in Janakpuri. If you are a fresh MBBS graduate or a PG specialist looking for clinical work in Delhi, this is worth a look.

Posts and Disciplines

• Senior Resident (Medicine): the biggest group of specialist openings, covering general medical care for inmates.
• Senior Resident (Orthopedics, Psychiatry, Ophthalmology and Pathology): one specialist opening in each of these four departments.
• Junior Resident (MBBS): general duty doctors against sanctioned and vacant JR posts — this is where most of the openings are.

Senior Residents and Junior Residents are interviewed on separate days at the Conference Hall, Prison Headquarters, near Lajwanti Garden Chowk, Janakpuri.

Service Conditions and Caveats

• Tenure: Each spell is 44 days and can be extended in 44-day steps. The total cap is 3 years for Senior Residents and 1 year for Junior Residents, counted from your joining date.
• Early termination: if doctors selected by the Centralized Recruitment Committee at MAMC join, your service ends at once, even mid-spell. The candidate with the lowest interview marks is released first.
• Senior Resident fallback: if no PG degree or diploma holder is available, an MBBS doctor with 2 years' experience from a government or government-empanelled hospital (including 1 year in the same specialty at a government hospital) can be considered. Doctors with 2 or more years of specialty experience get preference.
• Senior Residency limit: you must not have already completed 3+1 years of Senior Residency anywhere, regular or ad-hoc.
• Junior Resident internship cut-off: Indian graduates must have finished their internship on or after 29 October 2024. Foreign Medical Graduates who did the internship abroad are judged by the date they passed the FMGE.
• Delhi Medical Council: you need DMC registration; a valid DMC acknowledgement lets you sit the interview, but the full registration is a must at joining or the offer is cancelled.
• OBC relaxation: only for Delhi OBC candidates with a caste and non-creamy layer certificate issued by the Government of NCT of Delhi in financial year 2026-27. An acknowledgement slip is not accepted.
• Posting: you can be posted to any Central Jail in Delhi — Tihar, Rohini, Mandoli or the Lampur Detention Centre.
• Joining: you must join within 7 days of the offer letter, or the offer lapses.
• Resignation: give 7 days' notice, or pay back salary for the days you fall short.
• Other points: no TA/DA for the interview, the number of vacancies may change at any stage, and any legal dispute falls under Delhi courts.

Fill the application proforma attached to the notice and send it with your documents by Speed Post, or hand it in personally between 10:00 AM and 5:00 PM, Monday to Friday, at the R&I Section, Prison Head Quarter, Near Lajwanti Garden Chowk, Janak Puri, New Delhi-110058.

On the interview day, report at the Conference Hall, Prison Headquarters between 10:00 AM and 11:00 AM for registration. Anyone arriving after 11:00 AM is not interviewed. Bring self-attested copies along with your original certificates for checking.
