UPSC CAPF Assistant Commandant Exam 2026 - Full Details

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has released the official notification for the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) Assistant Commandant Examination 2026. This is a great chance for graduates who want to serve the nation in uniform. The selected candidates will be posted as Assistant Commandants in BSF, CRPF, CISF, ITBP, and SSB.

Total Vacancies: 349 Posts

The force-wise breakdown of vacancies is:

• Border Security Force (BSF) - 108 posts
• Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) - 106 posts
• Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) - 70 posts
• Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB) - 53 posts
• Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) - 12 posts

10% of these posts are reserved for Ex-Servicemen.

Who Can Apply?

• Qualification: You need a Bachelor's degree from a recognized university.
• Age: You must be between 20 and 25 years old as on 1 August 2026.
• Age Relaxation: SC/ST candidates get 5 years relaxation. OBC candidates get 3 years relaxation.
• Gender: Both male and female candidates can apply.
• NCC B or C Certificate holders will get bonus marks.

Salary and Pay

Selected candidates will get salary in Pay Level 10 under the 7th Pay Commission. The pay range is Rs. 56,100 to Rs. 1,77,500 per month. You will also get allowances like DA, HRA, Transport Allowance, Ration Allowance, and Risk/Hardship Allowance.

• General / OBC / EWS (Male): Rs. 200
• Female candidates: No fee
• SC / ST candidates: No fee

Selection Process

The selection will happen in 4 stages:

1. Written Exam (19 July 2026) - 450 marks
2. Physical Standards Test (PST) / Physical Efficiency Test (PET)
3. Interview - 150 marks
4. Medical Standards Test

The total marks for final selection are 600 (Written 450 + Interview 150).

Exam Pattern

Paper I - General Ability and Intelligence (MCQ)

• Marks: 250
• Time: 2 hours
• About 160 multiple choice questions
• Negative marking: 1/3 marks deducted for each wrong answer
• Subjects: General Mental Ability, General Science, Current Events, Indian Polity and Economy, History, Geography

Paper II - General Studies, Essay and Comprehension (Descriptive)

• Marks: 200
• Time: 3 hours
• Part A: Essay writing (80 marks) - You can write in Hindi or English
• Part B: Comprehension and Precis Writing (120 marks) - English only

Physical Standards

For Men:

• Height: 165 cm
• Chest: 81 cm (with 5 cm expansion)
• Weight: 50 kg minimum

For Women:

• Height: 157 cm
• Weight: 46 kg minimum

Physical Efficiency Test (PET)

For Men:

• 100 metre race in 16 seconds
• 800 metre race in 3 minutes 45 seconds
• Long Jump: 3.5 metres
• Shot Put: 4.5 metres

For Women:

• 100 metre race in 18 seconds
• 800 metre race in 4 minutes 45 seconds
• Long Jump: 3.0 metres

• Lead and command a company of CAPF personnel in assigned area of deployment
• Maintain law and order and internal security in the assigned region
• Carry out border patrolling and guard border outposts (for BSF/ITBP/SSB)
• Plan and carry out anti-insurgency and counter-terrorism operations
• Manage the training, discipline, and welfare of troops under your command
• Handle crowd control, riot situations, and VIP security duties
• Provide security at industrial units and airports (for CISF)
• Keep proper records and submit reports to senior officers
• Ensure proper use and maintenance of weapons and equipment
• Coordinate with local police and other security agencies during operations
