TIFR Trade Apprentice Recruitment 2026: Overview

Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), an autonomous institute under the Department of Atomic Energy, is engaging Trade Apprentices at its main campus in Colaba, Mumbai. This is hands-on apprenticeship training under the Apprentices Act, designed for fresh ITI certificate holders who want supervised workshop and maintenance experience. The training does not create a right to a regular or temporary TIFR job, so you should view it as a structured learning opportunity rather than permanent employment.

Posts and Disciplines

  • Carpenter: practical training in measuring, cutting, shaping, fitting and repairing wooden fixtures used across the campus.
  • Electrician: supervised work with electrical installations, routine checks, wiring and safe fault reporting.
  • Fitter: bench-fitting, assembly, measurement and basic upkeep of mechanical parts and workshop equipment.
  • Welder (Gas and Electric): preparation and joining of metal components while following workshop safety procedures.
  • Painter: surface preparation and application of protective or finishing coats to campus assets.
  • Machinist: machine-shop practice involving drawings, measuring tools and controlled machining operations.
  • Turner: lathe-based training for producing and checking cylindrical components to specified dimensions.

Post-wise Duties

Carpenter

You will learn to read basic dimensions, prepare materials and carry out woodwork repairs under an experienced supervisor.

Electrician

You will support electrical inspection and maintenance, use tools safely and report faults before repair work begins.

Fitter

You will practise marking, filing, fitting and assembly while checking components with the correct measuring instruments.

Welder (Gas and Electric)

You will prepare joints, handle welding equipment and follow protective and fire-safety rules in the workshop.

Painter

You will prepare surfaces, mix and apply coatings, and help protect buildings and equipment from wear.

Machinist

You will set up basic machine operations, read shop drawings and check finished dimensions during training.

Turner

You will work on supervised lathe exercises and learn to produce accurately turned parts using safe operating methods.

Service Conditions and Caveats

  • Fresh-candidate rule: only fresh candidates are considered; anyone who has already completed apprenticeship training cannot join this drive.
  • Training status: the engagement is temporary, non-pensionable and governed by the Apprentices Act and applicable rules.
  • Completion test: after training, apprentices must appear for the All India Trade Test to demonstrate proficiency in their designated trade.
  • Travel and stay: TIFR will not pay TA or DA for attending the walk-in, and you must arrange your own stay in Mumbai during training.
  • Institute discretion: TIFR may leave some advertised seats unfilled, while canvassing in any form can disqualify you.

Application Submission Notes

You should complete apprenticeship portal registration and retain the confirmation email. TIFR also accepts its online recruitment form, while candidates who cannot register online may still attend the notified walk-in with the required papers.

The walk-in is held at TIFR, 1 Homi Bhabha Road, Navy Nagar, Colaba, Mumbai 400005, with reporting at 9:30 am. Bring the online-form printout and both originals and photocopies, because the institute checks them at the venue.

  • Handle tools, machines and materials under the guidance of trained staff
  • Read basic drawings, measurements and work instructions for trade tasks
  • Keep tools and the work area clean, organised and ready for use
