IIT Ropar Junior Research Fellow Recruitment 2026: Overview

Indian Institute of Technology Ropar (IIT Ropar) is looking for a Junior Research Fellow (JRF) in the Department of Physics' Photonics & Meta-Optics Laboratory. The position is funded by the Anusandhan National Research Foundation under its PMECRG scheme and focuses on broadband metasurfaces for thermal imaging. This is a hands-on photonics research opportunity for someone who wants to connect electromagnetic theory with simulation, nanofabrication and optical characterisation.

The project is led by Dr. Danveer Singh and will study the design and development of broadband metasurfaces that operate in the infrared region. You will be part of a specialist laboratory at the Rupnagar campus, with access to research facilities and guidance for producing high-quality technical work. A strong interest in metamaterials and metasurfaces matters because the role moves repeatedly between theory, numerical design and experimental validation.

The fellowship can also provide a route toward PhD registration at IIT Ropar, subject to the institute's admission rules. That makes the role particularly relevant if you want a research career and are prepared for sustained work on a defined scientific problem rather than a general teaching or administrative position.

Service Conditions and Caveats

  • Project status: the appointment is purely temporary and co-terminus with the funded project; it does not become a regular institute job automatically.
  • PhD pathway: the selected fellow may seek PhD registration at IIT Ropar, but admission remains subject to the applicable institute norms.
  • Research environment: the fellow can receive training in metasurface design, nanofabrication and advanced characterisation and may contribute to conference presentations and publications.

  • Reservation: reservation and age relaxation follow Government of India and ANRF rules.
  • Institute discretion: IIT Ropar may fill or leave the position unfilled based on the recruitment outcome.

Responsibilities

Eligibility Criteria

Minimum Qualification

BS-MS, MSc or MTech in Physics, Applied Physics, Photonics, Optics or a closely related discipline, with a consistently good academic record and valid CSIR-UGC NET, GATE or equivalent qualification.

Preferred Qualification

Hands-on electromagnetic simulation, metasurface design, nanofabrication or optical characterisation experience; publications in photonics or optics are an advantage.

Required Skills

Sound understanding of electromagnetic theory and optics, with strong interest in metamaterials and metasurfaces.

Salary & Compensation

Pay Scale

Fellowship: Rs. 37,000 per month + 10% HRA as applicable, as per ANRF norms

Allowances

House Rent Allowance at 10% is payable as applicable under ANRF norms.
