Wildlife Institute of India (WII), Dehradun is hiring 38 project positions across 10 wildlife research projects under Advt. No. WII/ADVT. 2/RP-CELL/May, 2026. If you have a Bachelor's, Master's or Doctoral degree in Natural Sciences (Wildlife Science, Zoology, Ecology, Forestry and related fields), you can apply online. Wildlife Institute of India (WII), an autonomous institute under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), Government of India, has released notification for 38 different project positions across 10 wildlife and biodiversity research projects. Projects include the All India Tiger Estimation 2026, Project Cheetah, Project Great Indian Bustard, monitoring of wildlife underpasses on highways, tiger landscape monitoring in Maharashtra and Vidarbha, and biodiversity impact assessment work. Indian nationals only can apply through the WII Recruitment Portal.

  • Project Associate-I (Vegetation / Disease / Ecology / RS-GIS / Conservation): 7 posts — Rs. 37,000 + HRA (NET/GATE) or Rs. 30,000 + HRA (non-NET)
  • Senior Project Associate / Principal Project Associate: 3 posts — Rs. 57,000 to Rs. 67,000 + HRA
  • Project Assistant: 6 posts — Rs. 27,000
  • Field Worker (Conservation Breeding): 3 posts — Rs. 24,000 + HRA
  • Administrative Assistant: 2 posts — Rs. 24,000 + HRA

Who Can Apply?

For Project Scientist-I (Rs. 77,000 + HRA)

  • Qualification: Doctoral Degree (Ph.D) in Natural Sciences — Wildlife Science, Zoology, Ecology, Environmental Sciences, Geoinformatics, Life Sciences or Forestry Sciences from a recognised institute or university.

For Project Associate-II / Principal Project Associate (Rs. 42,000 - 67,000 + HRA)

  • Qualification: Four-year Bachelor's degree (NEP) in Natural Sciences AND 2 years relevant experience, OR Master's degree in Natural Sciences AND 2 years relevant experience (4-8 years for Senior/Principal Project Associate).

For Project Associate-I (Rs. 37,000 + HRA / Rs. 30,000 + HRA)

  • Qualification: Four-year Bachelor's degree (NEP) OR Master's degree in Natural Sciences from a recognised institute or university. NET/GATE qualification fetches higher pay.

For Project Assistant / Field Worker (Rs. 24,000 - 27,000 + HRA)

  • Qualification: Bachelor's degree in Natural Sciences OR 3-year Diploma in Engineering. Field Worker positions need a Graduate degree in any discipline.

For Administrative Assistant (Rs. 24,000 + HRA)

  • Qualification: Graduate degree in any discipline from a recognised university. Experience in Accounting, Tally and Database Management is desirable.

Age Limit

  • Project Scientist-I, Senior Project Associate, Principal Project Associate: Maximum 40 years
  • Project Associate-I and II: Maximum 35 years
  • Project Assistant, Field Worker, Administrative Assistant: Maximum 50 years
  • Age Relaxation: SC/ST candidates get 5 years; OBC candidates get 3 years upper-age relaxation as per Government of India DoPT OM dated 27.03.2012.

  • Project Scientist-I (Ecology): Rs. 77,000 + HRA per month
  • Principal Project Associate: Rs. 67,000 + HRA per month
  • Senior Project Associate: Rs. 57,000 + HRA per month
  • Project Associate-II: Rs. 42,000 + HRA (NET/GATE qualified) or Rs. 33,000 + HRA (non-NET) per month
  • Project Associate-I: Rs. 37,000 + HRA (NET/GATE qualified) or Rs. 30,000 + HRA (non-NET) per month
  • Project Associate-I (Consolidated): Rs. 37,200 per month (no HRA)
  • Project Assistant: Rs. 27,000 per month
  • Field Worker / Administrative Assistant: Rs. 24,000 + HRA per month

Selection Process

Selection is based on academic merit and online interview (No Written Exam):

  1. Shortlisting (50 marks): Based on qualification, age, percentage of marks in Bachelor's/Master's degree, specialisation relevance, research experience and publications.
    • Field/Lab/Project Assistant: 25 marks (Bachelor's) + 25 marks (specialisation)
    • Project Associate-I: 25 marks (Master's) + 25 marks (specialisation)
    • Project Associate-II / Senior / Principal / Scientist: 5 marks (NET/JRF/CSIR/ICAR) + 25 marks (PG) + 10 marks (experience) + 10 marks (publications)
  2. Online Interview: Top 10 shortlisted candidates per position called for online interview by a duly constituted Selection Committee.
  3. Document Verification: Selected candidates must produce all original documents at the time of joining.

Responsibilities

  • Design and conduct field surveys, data collection, GIS mapping and report writing in wildlife research projects
  • Carry out tiger, prey and habitat monitoring using camera trapping, M-StrIPES and line transects
  • Conduct community outreach, awareness programs and human-wildlife conflict mitigation work
  • Analyse ecological data using statistical tools, R programming and spatial modelling
  • Prepare technical reports, scientific publications and project deliverables under Principal Investigator guidance
  • Coordinate with forest departments, NGOs, ONGC, Oil India and local stakeholders
  • Travel to remote field sites and stay for extended periods for fieldwork in tiger reserves and biodiversity hotspots
  • Maintain project records, accounting and administrative documentation (for Administrative Assistant posts)

Minimum Qualification

Bachelor's / Master's / Doctoral Degree in Natural Sciences (Wildlife Science, Zoology, Ecology, Environmental Sciences, Geoinformatics, Life Sciences, Forestry Sciences) — depending on position

Preferred Qualification

UGC/CSIR/ICAR NET, JRF, GATE qualification; prior research experience in wildlife ecology, camera trapping, GIS, statistical modelling; scientific publications in SCI-indexed journals

Required Skills

Field research, data analysis (R, GIS — ArcGIS/QGIS/ERDAS), camera trapping, line transects, community engagement, scientific report writing
