NLSIU Library Trainee Recruitment 2026: Overview

National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bengaluru — the law university that has topped the NIRF law rankings for eight years running — is looking for a Library Trainee for its Shri Narayan Rao Melgiri Memorial National Law Library. It is a contract role for six months from the date you join, based on the Bengaluru campus, and the university may extend it if needed. Freshers are preferred, so this suits you if you have just finished a master's in library science and want hands-on work in a busy academic law library.

You will work alongside the NLSIU librarians and get training across every section of the library. Most of your time, though, goes into cataloguing — the notice is clear that catalogue work to MARC and AACR II standards is the main job, with digital collections and the institutional repository coming after it.

Service Conditions and Caveats

• Tenure: Six months from the date of appointment, which NLSIU may extend if the library needs it.
• Shift work: The library is open from 9 AM to midnight, so you may be put on rotating shifts, including weekends and holidays.
• Work priorities: Catalogue clean-up in KOHA comes first, then the digitised collection in Calibre, and the DSpace repository last.
• Interview call: Only shortlisted candidates are contacted, and the interview call comes by email.

• Copy-catalogue books in KOHA using Z39.50 from the Library of Congress
• Edit and standardise catalogue records to MARC21 and RDA/AACR2 rules
• Correct author, title, edition, publication, pagination, subject and classification fields
• Check holdings data and update old records where no automated data exists
• Review scanned PDFs in Calibre for completeness and quality, and add proper metadata
• Update accession numbers, call numbers and edition details for digital records
• Fix dissertation titles, URLs, abstracts and metadata in the DSpace repository (DANS)
