National Informatics Centre (NIC), the technology backbone of the Government of India, has announced 243 Scientist B vacancies across three disciplines — Computer Sciences & IT, Electronics & Communication, and Data Science & AI. NIC is the country's premier organization for e-Governance and IT infrastructure under the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology. Selection is through GATE score and personal interaction — there is no separate written exam conducted by NIC. Engineering graduates and postgraduates with a valid GATE score should apply before the deadline.

Who Can Apply?
For Computer Sciences & IT (GATE Paper: CS)
- Qualification: Bachelor's Degree in Engineering/Technology OR Master's Degree in Computer Science/Computer Application (MCA)/M.Tech/M.Phil from a recognized university or institute
- GATE Score: You must have a valid GATE 2024, 2025, or 2026 score in Computer Science & Information Technology (CS)
For Electronics and Communication (GATE Paper: EC)
- Qualification: Bachelor's/Master's Degree in Engineering/Technology in Electronics, Electronics & Communication, or related fields
- GATE Score: Valid GATE 2024/2025/2026 score in Electronics & Communication Engineering (EC)
For Data Science and AI (GATE Paper: DA)
- Qualification: Bachelor's/Master's Degree in relevant fields including Computer Sciences, Communication, Networking Security, Software System, IT, Informatics, Computer Management, Cyber Law, Electronics and Instrumentation
- GATE Score: Valid GATE 2024/2025/2026 score in Data Science & Artificial Intelligence (DA)
Experience: No experience is required. Freshers with a valid GATE score can apply directly.
The essential qualification must be obtained by the cut-off date of 31 March 2026.
Age Limit
- UR/EWS: Maximum 30 years as on 31 March 2026
- OBC (Non-Creamy Layer): Maximum 33 years
- SC/ST: Maximum 35 years
- PwBD (UR/EWS): Maximum 40 years
- PwBD (OBC NCL): Maximum 43 years
- PwBD (SC/ST): Maximum 45 years
- Government Servants: Up to 5 years additional relaxation for those in allied cadres
- Ex-Servicemen: As per Government rules
Salary
- Selected candidates will be placed in Pay Level 10 of the 7th Central Pay Commission.
- Salary range: Rs. 56,100 to Rs. 1,77,500 per month (entry pay is Rs. 56,100).
- You will also receive DA, HRA, TA and other allowances as per Central Government rules.

Selection Process (No Separate Written Exam)
NIC does not conduct a separate written exam. Your GATE score is used for shortlisting and final merit. The selection happens in 3 stages:
- Shortlisting based on GATE Score: Candidates are shortlisted in a 1:5 ratio (discipline-wise and category-wise) based on their GATE 2024/2025/2026 score. Equal weightage is given to all three years.
- Document Verification: Original documents will be verified before you appear for the interview. You must bring all certificates in original — non-production will lead to rejection.
- Personal Interaction/Interview (Max 50 marks): You will be assessed on Technical (Academic) Knowledge, Presentation/Communication Skills, and Academic Performance. Minimum qualifying marks: 50% for UR and 40% for EWS/OBC/SC/ST/PwBD.
Final Merit Formula: 60% weightage to GATE Score + 40% weightage to Personal Interaction marks. The final selection is category-wise and discipline-wise based on this combined merit.

- Design, develop, and maintain e-Governance applications and digital platforms for government departments
- Work on national-level ICT infrastructure projects including cloud services, networks, and data centres
- Provide technical consultancy and IT support to Central and State Government ministries
- Develop and deploy software solutions for public service delivery and digital governance initiatives
- Conduct research in emerging technologies like AI, machine learning, blockchain, and cybersecurity
- Manage databases, servers, and network security for government IT systems
- Prepare technical documentation, project reports, and system design specifications

Exam Pattern

Minimum Qualifying Marks: You need at least 50% for UR category and 40% for EWS/OBC/SC/ST/PwBD in the interview to be considered for the merit list.
Final Merit Calculation
- GATE Score Weightage: 60%
- Interview Weightage: 40%
Your final rank is based on the combined aggregate of 60% GATE score + 40% interview marks, calculated discipline-wise and category-wise.
Tie-Breaking Rules
- Candidate with higher GATE paper score ranks higher
- If still tied, candidate with more marks in Technical Knowledge section of the interview ranks higher
- If still tied, the older candidate ranks higher
