The General Administration Department, Government of Maharashtra has released advertisement No. GAD-12022/16/2026-GAD (Desk-6) dated 13 May 2026 for filling up one vacant post of State Information Commissioner in the Maharashtra State Information Commission, constituted under the Right to Information Act, 2005. This is a high-profile constitutional appointment made through a Search-cum-Screening Committee following the directions of the Hon'ble Supreme Court in Anjali Bhardwaj vs. Union of India (Writ Petition Civil No. 436/2018). The tenure, salary and other terms of service are governed by the Right to Information Rules, 2019 notified by the Central Government on 24 October 2019.
Who Can Apply?
Basic Eligibility under the RTI Act
- You must be a person of eminence in public life with wide knowledge and experience in any of the following areas: Law, Science and Technology, Social Service, Management, Journalism, Mass Media, or Administration and Governance.
- You must not be a Member of Parliament or Member of the Legislature of any State/Union Territory.
- You must not hold any office of profit, be connected with any political party, run any business, or pursue any profession.
Other Terms and Conditions
- Educational Qualification: Graduate in any discipline.
- Minimum Experience: At least 15 years of experience in one or more of the listed fields. Preference will be given to candidates with experience in senior positions in Government, Semi-Government, Autonomous Institutions, Public Sector, reputed private sector organisations, and social/charitable institutions.
- Required Competencies: Knowledge of the Right to Information Act and related laws, understanding of quasi-judicial procedures, commitment to transparency, accountability and good governance, administrative leadership and decision-making ability.
Age Limit
- Minimum age: 45 years
- Maximum age: 63 years
- Age will be calculated as on the last date of submission of application (12 June 2026).
Salary and Service Conditions
- The tenure, salary, allowances and other terms and conditions of service of the State Information Commissioner shall be governed by the Right to Information (Term of Office, Salaries, Allowances and Other Terms and Conditions of Service of the Chief Information Commissioner, Information Commissioners and the State Chief Information Commissioner and State Information Commissioners) Rules, 2019.
- As per the 2019 Rules, the salary of a State Information Commissioner is fixed at Rs. 2,25,000 per month (equivalent to the salary of the Chief Secretary to the State Government).
- Plus allowances and benefits as admissible under the rules.

- The fee shall be paid through any of the modes prescribed for payment of fees under the Right to Information Act.
- The proof/receipt of payment must be enclosed with the application.
Selection Process
Selection is done by a Search-cum-Screening Committee constituted by the Government:
- Application Scrutiny: Applications received are scrutinised against the eligibility criteria notified by the Search-cum-Screening Committee.
- Shortlisting by Search Committee: The Committee shortlists candidates based on eminence, experience, qualifications and required competencies.
- Recommendation: The Committee recommends names to the appointing authority.
- Final Appointment: Appointment is made by the Governor on the recommendation of a committee consisting of the Chief Minister, Leader of the Opposition and a Cabinet Minister nominated by the Chief Minister, as per Section 15(3) of the RTI Act.
Note: There is no written examination for this post.

Responsibilities
- Receive and decide second appeals and complaints filed under the Right to Information Act, 2005
- Direct public authorities to provide information to citizens within the time limits prescribed under the RTI Act
- Impose penalties on Public Information Officers for delays or wrongful denial of information
- Recommend disciplinary action against erring officers for persistent default
- Monitor the implementation of the RTI Act across public authorities in Maharashtra
- Conduct inquiries into matters of suo motu disclosure of information under Section 4 of the RTI Act
- Prepare and submit annual reports to the State Government on the implementation of the RTI Act
- Promote transparency, accountability and good governance through quasi-judicial functions
