About This Job

JIPMER Puducherry is hiring 1 Junior Research Fellow (JRF) or Project Associate I on a contract basis under a SERB-funded research project on AI-based cervical cancer screening. If you have a Post Graduate degree in Basic Science or a Graduate/PG degree in a Professional Course with NET, GATE or equivalent, you can apply by email. The salary is Rs. 43,660 per month for JRF (with NET/GATE) or Rs. 35,400 per month for Project Associate I (without GATE). The Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), Puducherry has released advertisement number JIP/OG/Gyn Onco/Optical probe/cervical cancer/01 dated 30-04-2026 for 1 contract post in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology under Principal Investigator Dr Arpitha A. The work is on a SERB CRG-funded project titled "Development of bi-modal transvaginal probe and evaluation of its diagnostic accuracy for a non-invasive AI-based detection of preinvasive cervical lesion in comparison to standard colposcopy in screen positive patients". The position is for 1 year initially and may be extended up to 3 years based on performance. The work involves Python programming, computer vision, machine learning, biostatistics and manuscript writing.

Who Can Apply?

Essential Qualification:

  • You must have a Post Graduate Degree in Basic Science, OR a Graduate / Post Graduate Degree in a Professional Course.
  • You must have been selected through CSIR-UGC NET (including lectureship/Assistant Professorship), GATE, or a national-level examination conducted by Central Government departments and agencies such as DST, DBT, DAE, DOS, DRDO, MoE, ICAR, ICMR, IIT, IISc, IISER, NISER, etc.
  • If not GATE qualified, you can apply for the Project Associate I post (with lower salary).

Desirable:

  • Experience in clinical research, clinical analysis and biostatistics
  • Image processing and analysis using Python computer vision libraries (OpenCV, scikit-image)
  • Building computer vision models for image classification, object detection, segmentation and image generation
  • Experience developing Machine Learning / AI models for image analysis and segmentation
  • Good publication record in high-impact journals and conferences

Age Limit

  • Maximum age: 28 years (as on the last date of receipt of applications, i.e., 30 May 2026).
  • Age Relaxation: Available for women candidates, OBC, SC, ST and Persons with Disabilities (PH) as per government norms.

Salary

  • Junior Research Fellow (JRF) — with NET / GATE: Rs. 37,000 per month + 18% HRA (Rs. 5,040) = Rs. 43,660 per month
  • Project Associate I — if not GATE qualified: Rs. 30,000 per month + 18% HRA (Rs. 5,400) = Rs. 35,400 per month
  • Note: This is a consolidated salary. No other allowance or facility will be extended apart from the consolidated amount.
  • Engagement Duration: 1 year initially, extendable up to 3 years based on performance.

Selection Process

The selection will be done in the following stages:

  1. Application Shortlisting: Applicants will be shortlisted based on the application form, CV and supporting documents. The list of eligible candidates will be displayed on the JIPMER website.
  2. Written Test: The areas covered are analytical reasoning, logical reasoning, image processing, Python coding, machine learning / artificial intelligence, image classification and segmentation, object detection, biostatistics, clinical research and analysis.
  3. Interview: The areas covered are clinical image analysis, image processing, machine learning / AI, image classification, object detection, image segmentation, clinical research and analysis. The interview may be conducted in person or via videoconferencing.

Date and time of interview: 11 June 2026 at 8:00 AM at Skill Lab, first floor, WCH building, JIPMER, Puducherry.

Responsibilities

  • Process and analyse medical images using Python computer vision libraries such as OpenCV and scikit-image
  • Build computer vision models for image classification, object detection, segmentation and image generation
  • Apply artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms for image processing and identification of suspicious regions
  • Perform biostatistics analysis and inferences such as PCA, AUC and others on the data gathered from images
  • Work closely with the Principal Investigator on the SERB-funded cervical cancer screening project
  • Prepare and write manuscripts for publication in reputed journals and conferences
  • Travel to field sites and other study centres as required for data collection
  • Maintain accurate records of project work, experiments and results

Eligibility Criteria

Minimum Qualification

Post Graduate Degree in Basic Science OR Graduate / Post Graduate Degree in a Professional Course, selected through CSIR-UGC NET, GATE, or other national-level exams (DST, DBT, DAE, DOS, DRDO, MoE, ICAR, ICMR, IIT, IISc, IISER, NISER)

Preferred Qualification

Experience in clinical research, biostatistics, Python computer vision (OpenCV, scikit-image), machine learning and AI for image analysis. Good publication record in high-impact journals.
