IITM JRF Physics Recruitment 2026: Overview

Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) is hiring a Junior Research Fellow (JRF) in its Department of Physics in Chennai. The work brings together magnetic sensing, optical imaging and feedback control within a multidisciplinary research and development setting. The project is coordinated by Prof. Bhallamudi Vidya Praveen from Physics and Dr. Sudharshan Srinivasan from Electrical Engineering, with recruitment handled through the Office of Industrial Consultancy and Sponsored Research.

Service Conditions and Caveats

  • Contract term: The appointment is for one year and is purely contractual. Completing that term gives you no automatic right to an extension, regularisation or a permanent institute appointment.
  • Research setting: The team combines optics, magnetics, electronics, instrumentation, control systems and software development. The role sits within this shared research environment, with contributions brought together through project meetings and technical reporting.
  • Provisional consideration: Taking part in the recruitment does not establish that all your claims have been accepted. The institute can check the information you provide before appointment and during the contract.
  • Shortlisting discretion: IIT Madras may limit the applicant pool using academic achievements and the relevance of an applicant’s background. A call from the institute does not guarantee an offer.
  • Accuracy of claims: False information can lead to rejection. If false records or suppressed background information are discovered after appointment, the institute can end the engagement.
  • Institute decisions: IIT Madras can leave the advertised position unfilled or reject applications. It may also correct, withdraw or cancel a recruitment communication if an error is discovered, including after an appointment letter has been issued.
  • Existing project employees: If you already work on an IIT Madras project, follow the proper internal application channel. The notice sets a separate clearance condition for applicants who do not use that channel.
  • Online submission limits: The system accepts a single application against an advertisement through your registered email login. Your form cannot be edited or withdrawn after submission, and duplicate applications for the same post can lead to rejection.
  • Email contact: Use an active email address because recruitment correspondence will arrive by email. Only shortlisted applicants will be contacted; the institute does not entertain requests for individual reasons for shortlisting decisions.
  • Conduct: Trying to influence the recruitment through canvassing can disqualify you. Keep any communication within the channels and purposes described in the notice.
  • Participation: The institute encourages women to apply as part of its aim to improve gender balance in its workforce.
  • Updates: Any later clarification or correction will appear on the recruitment website. No separate message is promised for these changes, so check the advertisement page while your application is under consideration.

Responsibilities

  • Assemble and test magnetic sensing and optical imaging systems, including fibre-optic and optical coherence tomography platforms.
  • Collect magnetic signals and image data, and calibrate the measurement systems.
  • Develop feedback-control algorithms linking sensor readings, image-based tracking and actuators.
  • Integrate sensors, optics, electronics and software for real-time operation.
  • Test system performance and troubleshoot sensing and control problems.
  • Work with colleagues across optics, magnetics, instrumentation and software.
  • Prepare technical reports, experiment records and project presentations.
