IIT Roorkee RA and JRF Recruitment 2026: Overview
Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee) is recruiting a Research Associate-I and Junior Research Fellow through its Department of Civil Engineering. Both roles belong to a DRDO-sponsored project on centrifuge and numerical modelling of underground explosions in soils, led jointly by researchers at IIT Roorkee and IIT Bombay. The work combines geotechnical testing, physical modelling and numerical analysis, making this a specialised opportunity for researchers in soil dynamics, structural or earthquake engineering and related areas.
The project studies how soils respond to high-strain-rate and blast loading. It uses laboratory characterisation, centrifuge-model experiments and computational work together, so the team needs both advanced research leadership and early-career engineering support. Collaboration between the two IITs is built into the assignment, with part of the experimental work connected to the centrifuge facility at IIT Bombay.

- Research Associate-I: A doctoral-level role focused on geotechnical or earthquake engineering, mining, soil dynamics, physical centrifuge modelling or numerical modelling of blasts in soil.
- Junior Research Fellow: An engineering research role for candidates with civil-engineering training followed by a master's specialisation in structural engineering, structural dynamics, earthquake engineering or geotechnical engineering.
Post-wise Duties
Research Associate-I
You will lead geotechnical characterisation and centrifuge-model methodology, help design the model tests, take part in experiments at IIT Bombay and analyse the results. The work also includes turning the experimental findings into clear technical reports.
Junior Research Fellow
You will carry out high-strain-rate material characterisation of soils and support numerical modelling of blast effects. The project may also support your enrolment as a PhD scholar under the applicable project category.
Service Conditions and Caveats
- Project term: Both appointments are linked to the sponsored project, which is scheduled to continue until July 2029.
- Institute enrolment: All selected candidates must be officially enrolled at IIT Roorkee.
- Joint-institute work: Centrifuge testing may take place at IIT Bombay. The project will support the related travel and accommodation under its rules.
- Shortlisting and interaction: The interview will be conducted online through Webex, and only shortlisted candidates will receive the meeting link after initial screening.
- Verification: The institute may ask you to show original degrees and experience certificates during the interview process.
- Interview expenses: No TA or DA is payable for attending the interview.

Eligibility Criteria
Minimum Qualification
Research Associate-I: relevant PhD with at least one SCI Q1 or Q2 journal paper. JRF: BTech in Civil Engineering plus MTech in a relevant structural, earthquake, or geotechnical discipline and GATE qualification.
Preferred Qualification
Research experience in physical centrifuge modelling, numerical blast modelling, soil dynamics, high-strain-rate testing, or dynamic loading.
Required Skills
Geotechnical testing, centrifuge modelling, numerical modelling, finite-element software, programming, soil characterisation, data analysis, and technical report preparation.

Pay Scale
Research Associate-I: Rs. 58,000 per month plus 10% HRA. JRF: Rs. 37,000 per month for the first 2 years and Rs. 42,000 per month for the third year, plus 10% HRA.
