IIT Jammu is hiring 1 Junior Research Fellow (JRF) in the Department of Civil Engineering for a 3-year ANRF-funded research project. IIT Jammu Junior Research Fellow (JRF) Recruitment 2026 - 1 Post
Indian Institute of Technology Jammu (IIT Jammu) has invited applications for one Junior Research Fellow (JRF) position under the project titled "From Snowpack to Soil: Understanding Compound Drought Linkages and Summer Water Scarcity in India's Indus Water Treaty Western Basins". This is a three-year research project sanctioned under the ANRF ARG 2025 scheme (Sanction No. ANRF/ARG/2025/006111/EAS). The work focuses on diagnosing snow droughts in the Indus, Jhelum, and Chenab basins — a highly relevant domain for climate and water security research in India. The position is based at IIT Jammu's Department of Civil Engineering under the supervision of Dr. Divyesh Varade.
Who Can Apply?
Option 1 — Engineering Graduates
- Qualification: B.Tech. / B.E. in a relevant discipline with a minimum of 65% aggregate marks or 6.5 CGPA
- Entrance Test: Must be GATE qualified
Option 2 — Postgraduates
- Qualification: M.Tech. / M.S. / M.Sc. in a relevant discipline with a minimum of 65% aggregate marks or 6.5 CGPA

Fellowship / Salary
- Monthly fellowship: Rs. 37,000 per month + HRA

- No TA/DA is paid for appearing in the interview

Responsibilities
- Conduct research on snow drought characterization in the Indus, Jhelum, and Chenab basins
- Apply super-resolution techniques to downscale snow products using deep learning methods
- Analyse spatio-temporal snow drought patterns over the past two decades using satellite and climate datasets
- Study the impact of snow droughts on seasonal streamflow and terrestrial water storage dynamics
- Develop and implement Python / MATLAB / R scripts for data processing and model building
- Work with RS-GIS software tools for geospatial analysis of snow and hydrological datasets
- Prepare technical reports, manuscripts, and present research findings at conferences
- Assist the Principal Investigator in project deliverables and milestone reporting to the funding agency
Eligibility Criteria
Minimum Qualification
B.Tech./B.E. with 65% marks/6.5 CGPA and GATE qualification, OR M.Tech./M.S./M.Sc. with 65% marks/6.5 CGPA and GATE/NET qualification in relevant disciplines (Hydrology, Geoinformatics, Remote Sensing, Water Resources, Data Science, Climate Change)
Preferred Qualification
Experience in hydrology, droughts, Geo-AI, DL-ML applications; programming skills in Python/MATLAB/R; knowledge of RS-GIS software and deep learning for climate downscaling
