IIT Jammu Junior Research Fellow (JRF) Recruitment 2026 - 1 Post

Indian Institute of Technology Jammu (IIT Jammu) has invited applications for one Junior Research Fellow (JRF) position under the project titled "From Snowpack to Soil: Understanding Compound Drought Linkages and Summer Water Scarcity in India's Indus Water Treaty Western Basins". This is a three-year research project sanctioned under the ANRF ARG 2025 scheme (Sanction No. ANRF/ARG/2025/006111/EAS). The work focuses on diagnosing snow droughts in the Indus, Jhelum, and Chenab basins — a highly relevant domain for climate and water security research in India. The position is based at IIT Jammu's Department of Civil Engineering under the supervision of Dr. Divyesh Varade.

Who Can Apply?

Option 1 — Engineering Graduates

• Qualification: B.Tech. / B.E. in a relevant discipline with a minimum of 65% aggregate marks or 6.5 CGPA
• Entrance Test: Must be GATE qualified

Option 2 — Postgraduates

• Qualification: M.Tech. / M.S. / M.Sc. in a relevant discipline with a minimum of 65% aggregate marks or 6.5 CGPA
• Entrance Test: Must be GATE or NET qualified

Desirable Skills

• Hands-on experience in remote sensing, GIS, hydrology, water resources, data science, and climate change
• Programming skills in Python, MATLAB, or R, and experience with RS-GIS software
• Knowledge of applied deep learning for climate variable downscaling
• Good technical writing skills
• Experience in hydrology / droughts / Geo-AI / DL-ML applications is an added advantage

Age Limit

• Maximum age: 30 years (for General category)
• Age Relaxation: SC / ST / OBC / Women / PH candidates will get relaxation as per Government of India norms

Fellowship / Salary

• Monthly fellowship: Rs. 37,000 per month + HRA
• Note: This is a project-based contract appointment. No PF, Pension, Gratuity, Medical Allowance, Seniority, or Promotion benefits are applicable
• No TA/DA is paid for appearing in the interview

Selection Process

Selection is based on merit and project requirements:

1. Shortlisting: Applications will be screened based on academic merit and relevance of experience. Only shortlisted candidates will be called for interview
2. Interview: Shortlisted candidates will be informed by e-mail. The interview will be conducted in hybrid mode (online or in-person)

• Conduct research on snow drought characterization in the Indus, Jhelum, and Chenab basins
• Apply super-resolution techniques to downscale snow products using deep learning methods
• Analyse spatio-temporal snow drought patterns over the past two decades using satellite and climate datasets
• Study the impact of snow droughts on seasonal streamflow and terrestrial water storage dynamics
• Develop and implement Python / MATLAB / R scripts for data processing and model building
• Work with RS-GIS software tools for geospatial analysis of snow and hydrological datasets
• Prepare technical reports, manuscripts, and present research findings at conferences
• Assist the Principal Investigator in project deliverables and milestone reporting to the funding agency
