IIT ISM CSE Research Fellows Recruitment 2026: Overview

Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad (IIT ISM Dhanbad) is building a small research team in its Department of Computer Science and Engineering for the sponsored Qu-GEN project. The project is developing a versatile quanvolutional neural-network library for better image analysis on quantum computers, so the work combines computer vision with hybrid quantum-classical learning. The team includes junior or senior research fellows alongside a postdoctoral fellow, giving both early-career researchers and an experienced PhD holder a route into the same technical programme. The principal investigator is Prof. Partha Pratim Roy.

The research goal is practical as well as experimental: the group will design, implement and evaluate an image-analysis framework that can divide work between classical systems and quantum-computing components. You should be comfortable moving between algorithms, code and evaluation, because the project is not limited to a literature review. Experience with deep learning, computer vision, image processing, Git or GitHub and scientific writing fits the fellow-level work, while the postdoctoral role places greater weight on quantum learning, publications and independent research. The exact role offered at fellow level will depend on your research experience.

Posts and Disciplines

• Junior Research Fellow or Senior Research Fellow: Work on deep-learning, computer-vision and image-processing problems within the hybrid quantum-classical framework. The senior designation is for researchers who already meet the project’s research-experience condition.
• Postdoctoral Fellow: Take a more independent research role in hybrid quantum-classical learning or quantum image processing, supported by a publication record in relevant journals or conferences.

Post-wise Duties

Junior Research Fellow or Senior Research Fellow

You will help design experiments, build reproducible code and test how quanvolutional components affect image-analysis results. You will also keep the research repository and experiment records organised so results can be compared and reported clearly.

Postdoctoral Fellow

You will lead advanced modelling and evaluation, connect quantum-learning ideas with the project’s image-processing goals, and help turn findings into journal and conference publications. You may also guide fellow-level researchers on experimental design and scientific writing.

Service Conditions and Caveats

• Project setting: The appointments are attached to a sponsored research and development project with a stated project tenure of 36 months.
• Shortlisting: Meeting the minimum academic condition does not guarantee an interview. The institute will compare merit, relevant experience and the project’s technical needs.
