DLSA Ranchi Assistant Legal Aid Defense Counsel Recruitment 2026

The District Legal Services Authority (DLSA), Ranchi has released a notice for engaging one full-time Assistant Legal Aid Defense Counsel in the Legal Aid Defense Counsel Office in Ranchi. This engagement is under the Legal Aid Defense Counsel System (LADCS) launched by NALSA and implemented by the Jharkhand State Legal Services Authority (JHALSA) across select districts of Jharkhand. The selected lawyer will work exclusively on legal aid matters — helping underprivileged and disadvantaged people get proper criminal defense at no cost. This is a contractual role for 2 years, with yearly extension possible based on satisfactory performance. The engaged lawyer cannot take private cases or any other retainership during the term.

Who Can Apply?

  • Qualification: You must have an LLB degree and be enrolled with the Bar Council under the Advocates Act, 1961.
  • Experience: Practice in criminal law from 0 to 3 years (freshers with criminal law interest are eligible).
  • Communication: Good oral and written communication skills in English and Hindi.
  • Legal Knowledge: Thorough understanding of the ethical duties of a defence counsel.
  • IT Knowledge: IT proficiency is required for this role.
  • Writing & Research: Excellent writing and research skills are expected.
  • Other: You must be able to work effectively with others as part of a team.

Salary

  • Monthly honorarium (retainership fee): Rs. 25,000 to Rs. 45,000 per month.
  • Ranchi is classified as a Class-A city (population above 10 lakh) under the NALSA honorarium structure.
  • The exact amount within the range is determined based on your qualifications, experience, and the selection committee's decision.
  • Note: You are entitled to 12 days of leave per calendar year on a pro-rata basis. No pay will be given for absence beyond admissible leave, and un-availed leave cannot be carried forward or encashed.

Selection Process (No Written Exam)

Selection is entirely merit-based — there is no written examination:

  1. Application Screening: Applications with self-attested documents are reviewed by the selection committee.
  2. Merit-Based Assessment: Selection takes into account knowledge, skills, practice, and experience in criminal law. The committee is chaired by the Principal District & Sessions Judge (who is also the Chairman of DLSA), with at least three senior judicial officers as members.
  3. Document Verification: Original certificates and Bar Council enrollment documents are verified.
  4. Final Approval: The engagement contract is executed between the Secretary, DLSA Ranchi and the selected person after approval from the Executive Chairman, SLSA.

Responsibilities

  • File cases and conduct trials in Magistrate trial courts for legal aid beneficiaries
  • Handle remand, bail applications, and other miscellaneous court work
  • Carry out legal research in all assigned legal aid cases
  • Visit prisons and legal aid clinics as directed by the Chief Legal Aid Defense Counsel
  • Provide assistance to suspects at the pre-arrest stage as per NALSA guidelines
  • Assist the Chief and Deputy Legal Aid Defense Counsel in conducting legal aid cases
  • Develop defence strategies by reviewing prosecution evidence and meeting the accused's family
  • Update legal aid seekers about the progress of their cases on a regular basis
  • Maintain complete and up-to-date case files for all legal aid matters
  • Handle legal queries related to criminal matters received on telephone

Eligibility Criteria

Minimum Qualification

LLB (Bachelor of Laws) with enrollment under Bar Council of India / State Bar Council

Preferred Qualification

LLM (Master of Laws) preferred; prior experience in criminal law practice
