About This Job

Apply for 3 General Manager (E8) posts in CIL. B.Tech/B.E. with 20 years experience eligible. Salary: Rs 1,20,000-2,80,000. Last date: 11 Nov 2026.

CIL General Manager Recruitment 2026: Overview

Coal India Limited (CIL), the Maharatna public sector company under the Ministry of Coal, is hiring senior engineers as General Manager in the E8 grade through lateral recruitment. The posts sit in its new Renewable Energy and Thermal Power verticals, which CIL is building up as it moves beyond coal into solar, wind, pumped storage and large coal-based power plants.

This is a leadership hire, not an entry-level drive. It is open to experienced professionals from power utilities, power-sector PSUs, government bodies and large private power companies, and serving CIL employees with the right qualification and experience can apply too.

Posts and Disciplines

  • General Manager (E8) – Renewables: for electrical, mechanical, civil, electrical and electronics, or electronics and communication engineers who also have at least 3 years of renewable energy work (projects, business development, regulatory, commercial or engineering) in the last 10 years.
  • General Manager (E8) – Civil (Thermal Power Projects): for civil engineers with long experience in planning, building and running greenfield or brownfield power projects, including time at a senior managerial level.
  • General Manager (E8) – Mechanical (Thermal Power Projects): for mechanical engineers who have executed coal-based thermal power projects with 500 MW or larger units, including time at a senior managerial level.

All three posts are unreserved (UR).

Post-wise Duties

General Manager – Renewables

You will lead CIL's renewable energy projects end to end — project planning, policy interface, execution and the strategic roadmap for solar, wind and storage capacity.

General Manager – Civil (Thermal Power Projects)

You will lead and supervise the civil engineering work on CIL's thermal power projects, from planning through construction and execution.

General Manager – Mechanical (Thermal Power Projects)

You will lead and supervise the mechanical execution of CIL's coal-based thermal power plants.

Service Conditions and Caveats

  • Level equivalence: Govt./PSU applicants need 2 years in the grade just below E8 or its equivalent; private-sector applicants must meet the minimum CTC the notice sets for the last financial year. For pay structures that do not map directly, the Selection Committee decides equivalence from your documents.
  • Private-sector condition: Only regular service in a company, JV or cooperative federation with an annual turnover of Rs. 1,000 crore or more counts; candidates from listed companies get preference.
  • Pay fixation: Private-sector appointees start at the minimum of the scale with no pay protection; Govt./PSU staff moving up a grade may get one extra increment.
  • Experience counting: Internships, ad-hoc, contractual and officiating service do not count; regular MT/ET/GET service that led to absorption does.
  • Cadre and seniority: You will be placed in the E&M, Civil or E&T cadre based on your degree, below the junior-most officer in the grade, with no seniority for past service.
  • Probation and posting: One year of probation, and you can be posted to CIL or any of its subsidiaries anywhere in India.
  • Internal candidates: No upper age limit for CIL employees who meet the qualification and experience rules.
  • Interview travel: Outstation shortlisted candidates get economy air fare or AC 2-tier fare reimbursed to their bank account.
