Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) Pune is engaging a Postdoctoral Fellow in its Data Science Department for a temporary research assignment. The work sits at the meeting point of machine learning and atmospheric science: you will examine modern deep-learning weather models and study how faithfully they represent the physics of the atmosphere.

This role is designed for a quantitative researcher who can move between code, meteorological data and physical interpretation. Experience with Python data-analysis tools, especially PyTorch or scikit-learn, is useful. The institute also values work with meteorological datasets and earlier analysis of numerical weather models, global circulation models or AI-based weather systems.

The research is collaborative rather than isolated. You will work with doctoral and postgraduate students in the group, discuss results with other researchers, and present the work through conferences, workshops and scientific journals. Candidates who have submitted their doctoral thesis can also be considered, which makes the opening relevant to researchers who are finishing the transition from PhD work to an independent research profile.

IISER Pune was founded in 2006 to support research and teaching in the basic sciences and became an Institute of National Importance in 2012. The fellowship uses that academic setting for a focused investigation of data-driven weather prediction, with an emphasis on understanding the science inside a model rather than treating it only as a forecasting tool.

Service Conditions and Caveats

• Temporary engagement: The fellowship is contractual and will end automatically without separate notice or compensation. It is not a regular institute appointment.
• Initial tenure: The first appointment is for one year. IISER Pune may extend it further when your performance is satisfactory.
• No absorption claim: Selection does not give you a right to regular appointment or absorption in IISER Pune.
• Institute rules: The engagement will follow IISER Pune's applicable terms and conditions for the assignment.
• Recognised qualification: Your doctoral qualification must be from a recognised university or institution. Thesis-submitted candidates should clearly state their status in the application.
• Competitive screening: Possessing the basic qualification does not guarantee an interview. If many applications arrive, a Screening Committee may use qualifications and experience beyond the minimum to prepare a manageable shortlist.
