Directorate of Medical Education, West Bengal (DME West Bengal) is engaging a Scientist-B (Medical) for the Viral Research and Diagnostic Laboratory at R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital, Kolkata. The laboratory is part of the DHR-ICMR programme for strengthening a nationwide network that responds to epidemics and national calamities. This is a medical research and public-health laboratory role, not a routine clinical posting.

The Scientist-B will work in the Department of Microbiology, where laboratory investigation, research documentation and coordination around epidemic-prone diseases are central to the job. The post is a good fit for a medical, dental or veterinary graduate with relevant research or teaching exposure who wants hands-on work in a funded diagnostic network. Higher specialist qualifications and post-doctoral training are preferred because the role combines scientific judgement with operational laboratory work.

The appointment is full-time and project-linked. You may need to work in shifts, make field visits and take night duty during emergencies, while private practice is not permitted. The laboratory setting calls for dependable record keeping, safe handling practices and the ability to communicate findings clearly to clinical and research teams.

Service Conditions and Caveats

• Initial tenure: The contract begins for one year and may be renewed after satisfactory performance while DHR-ICMR funding remains available or until the funding agency issues another order.
• No regularisation claim: The contractual appointment does not create a right to permanent absorption at the medical college.
• Termination: Either side may end the contract with thirty days' notice or salary in place of notice when performance or continuation is not satisfactory.
• Work pattern: The selected person may be assigned shifts, field visits or emergency night duty and must follow the institute's conduct and discipline rules.
• Private practice: No form of private practice is allowed during this full-time engagement.
• Accommodation: The institute will not provide hostel or other residential accommodation.
• Language ability: Effective communication in Bengali, English and Hindi is expected.
• Reservation and expenses: The notice applies no category reservation to this post and provides no TA or DA for attending the interview.
