IOP Postdoc and Research Associate CMPE Recruitment 2026: Overview

Institute of Physics (IOP), Bhubaneswar is recruiting Postdoctoral Fellows and Research Associates for its Condensed Matter Physics Experiment (CMPE) Group. These are project-based appointments under the Department of Atomic Energy (DAE) physics research programme, identified as RIO 4004.

Condensed Matter Physics Experiment is the focus of this notice. The notice brings several experimental research topics into one application window, and you may ask to be considered for more than one topic.

Posts and Disciplines

  • Research Topic-1 — Novel electronic phases: The group studies how dimensionality, electronic correlations, spin, orbitals and lattice behaviour shape solids. The scope includes topological matter, quantum transport, magnetism and thin-film heterostructures.
  • Research Topic-2 — Neuromorphic computing: This project connects ferroelectric polarization with memristive switching. Its aim is to develop devices that reproduce aspects of synaptic and neuronal behaviour for energy-efficient computing.
  • Research Topic-3 — Advanced functional materials: The work spans fundamental and applied condensed-matter physics, including thin films, nanoscale systems and strongly correlated bulk materials. Electronic, structural and magnetic properties are central themes.
  • Research Topic-4 — Ion-implanted systems: This project examines defect engineering in wide-band-gap materials such as diamond and oxide thin films. It studies changes in electrical and optical behaviour and the movement of defects.

Post-wise Duties

Neuromorphic device research

For Research Topic-2, you will lead experimental work on device fabrication, structural and spectroscopic characterization, and precise electrical testing. The work assesses hardware performance for brain-inspired computing, including crossbar-level behaviour.

Ion implantation research

For Research Topic-4, you will study how ion implantation changes the electrical and optical properties of wide-band-gap systems. The project also examines the part played by defect migration.

Service Conditions and Caveats

  • Initial tenure: Your appointment starts with one year. A second year is possible after a performance review under institute rules; continuation is conditional.
  • Further extension: A third year may be considered if performance and available funding support it. The institute also considers the time needed to finish the project and may grant a full-year or shorter extension.
  • Accommodation: Campus housing depends on availability. The offer does not guarantee an institute residence.

Application Submission Notes

Email your application to cmpe@iopb.res.in. In your cover letter, identify the Research Topic number or numbers you want to be considered for; do not leave the group to infer your choice.

Use the prescribed subject format: CMPE Postdoctoral/Research Associate - [Research Topic-Number(s)]. Your referees should send their recommendation letters directly to the same email address within the application window.

Responsibilities

  • Design memristive devices for brain-inspired computing under Research Topic-2.
  • Fabricate devices using the project's experimental processes.
  • Characterize device structures and materials using spectroscopic methods.
  • Run precise electrical tests on the experimental devices.
  • Evaluate crossbar-level hardware performance for neuromorphic computing.

Eligibility Criteria

Minimum Qualification

Ph.D. completed or thesis submitted. Selected applicants must provide a Ph.D. degree or provisional certificate before joining.

Preferred Qualification

Relevant peer-reviewed publications. Topic 1: background in correlated electrons, topological matter, magnetism, quantum transport or related areas. Topic 2: memristive devices, RRAM, artificial synapses or oxide/ferroelectric electronics; sputtering/P...

Required Skills

Research-topic-specific experimental expertise in electronic and magnetic phases, functional materials, neuromorphic devices or ion implantation.
