CSIR-NIO Project Associate-II Recruitment 2026: Overview
CSIR-National Institute of Oceanography (CSIR-NIO) is recruiting a Project Associate-II for a fixed-term marine geophysics assignment at its Goa headquarters. The role belongs to a research project reconstructing Holocene coral-reef palaeoecosystems and related landforms around selected Indian islands. It suits a geophysics researcher who is comfortable moving between remote field sites, instrument data and scientific reporting.
The project uses ground-penetrating radar (GPR) to study features that are not easily understood from surface observations alone. Your work will support the project leader during field acquisition and continue after the trip, when the collected signals need processing, interpretation and conversion into a clear report. The combination of outdoor acquisition and computer-based analysis is the defining feature of this opening.
This is not a general laboratory support position. The institute specifically values familiarity with GPR data acquisition and processing, Radan software, and MATLAB or Python. Strong physical fitness and a willingness to spend substantial time in remote locations are also important because the research sites may be away from routine campus facilities.
The position is based at CSIR-NIO headquarters in Goa, while the project itself concerns selected islands around India. You should therefore read the posting place and field-travel expectation together: Goa is the administrative base, but the scientific work may take you to distant survey locations. The role offers a focused way to apply geophysical methods to coral-reef and geomorphology research within a national ocean-science institute.
Service Conditions and Caveats
- Project appointment: the engagement is temporary and tied to the named research project rather than a regular institute post.
- Fixed tenure: the post is planned for 12 months, so you should treat it as a defined research assignment.
- Work base: your formal posting is at the Goa headquarters, with field activity connected to the project's selected island sites.
- Field readiness: you must be willing and physically able to carry out extensive work in remote locations.
- Technical fit: practical familiarity with GPR workflows and data-processing tools will matter in day-to-day work, even though those items are listed as desirable rather than the base degree.
- Application route: use the vacancy-specific link provided by CSIR-NIO; the institute's general vacancies page is only a directory and not the form for this opening.
Responsibilities
- Collect GPR data during field surveys at selected research sites
- Process and interpret the acquired geophysical data
- Assist the project leader with field planning and survey execution
- Prepare clear technical reports from field and processing results
- Use Radan, MATLAB, or Python for research-data workflows
- Keep field observations, files, and instrument records organized
