CSIR-NIO Project Associate-I Recruitment 2026: Overview

CSIR-National Institute of Oceanography (CSIR-NIO), a laboratory of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research under the Ministry of Science and Technology, is engaging a Project Associate-I at its Goa headquarters. The appointment supports a focused submarine-pipeline survey near the Mangalore coast. It is a hands-on marine-geophysics assignment that connects scientific analysis with work at sea.

The project concerns inspection planning for two MRPL pipelines measuring 650 metres and 750 metres. Subsea infrastructure cannot be assessed through a single data source, so the work brings together seismic information and other geophysical observations. Your contribution will help the project leader turn raw survey records into models and interpretations that explain conditions around the pipelines.

This role has a strong data-processing and modelling component. Seismic datasets need careful cleaning, organization and interpretation before the team can use them in a technical assessment. Knowledge of programming tools such as Fortran, C, C++, MATLAB or Python can make that work more efficient, especially when repeated calculations or visual checks are needed. The institute lists this programming background as useful rather than as a substitute for the core geophysics qualification.

The other side of the assignment is scientific cruise participation. You may need to join marine trips for data acquisition, follow the survey plan and keep clear notes that connect onboard observations with the digital records reviewed later. That mix makes the post a good fit for someone who is comfortable working both at a computer and in a changing field environment. Sea conditions and vessel schedules can affect the order and pace of daily tasks.

Although the project is compact, it offers exposure to applied marine geophysics in a national ocean-research institute. You will see how survey data moves from acquisition to processing, modelling and final interpretation. The work is tied to a defined industrial survey need, so accuracy, traceable records and clear communication with the project leader matter throughout the engagement.

Service Conditions and Caveats

  • Tenure: The position is being filled for 3 months. This is a project-based engagement, not a regular CSIR-NIO appointment.
  • Place of work: You will be attached to the CSIR-NIO headquarters in Goa, with marine travel linked to the survey work.
  • Sea duty: The job includes participation in scientific cruises for data acquisition, so you should be ready for work aboard a research vessel.
  • Technical focus: The assignment centres on processing, modelling and interpreting seismic and other geophysical data for the pipeline survey.
  • Project schedule: Tasks will follow the survey programme and directions of the project leader; marine operations may change with field conditions and vessel availability.

Responsibilities

  • Process seismic and other geophysical survey data
  • Build and review models for submarine-pipeline assessment
  • Interpret survey results under the project leader's guidance
  • Join scientific cruises for marine data acquisition
  • Keep clear records linking field observations with digital datasets
  • Use suitable programming tools to support analysis and visualization
