IUAC JRF Physics Recruitment 2026: Overview
Inter-University Accelerator Centre (IUAC) is selecting Junior Research Fellows for its accelerator and ion-beam based experimental research programme in New Delhi. This is also the entry route to IUAC's doctoral programme, with successful fellows registering for a PhD through Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU). The opportunity is aimed at physics graduates who want hands-on research around major accelerator facilities rather than a purely classroom-based programme.
IUAC works as a national centre where university researchers can use sophisticated accelerator systems and associated laboratories. As a fellow, you will join an environment that brings together experimental physics, materials characterisation, accelerator technology, and atomic-scale investigation. Your exact research problem will depend on the group and supervisor, but the advertised areas show a strong focus on experiments, instruments, and data produced through ion-beam or accelerator work.
Posts and Disciplines
- Material Science: Experimental work using ion beams and related facilities to study how materials behave, change, or can be characterised.
- Nuclear Physics: Research centred on nuclear reactions, structure, measurements, and analysis using accelerator-based experiments.
- Accelerator Physics: Work connected with beam production, control, transport, instrumentation, and the operation or development of accelerator systems.
- Atomic and Molecular Physics: Experimental studies of atoms, molecules, collisions, and their interaction with energetic beams.
You should choose the area that best matches your physics background and be ready to discuss your academic preparation and research interests. The advertisement does not assign separate seat totals to these disciplines, so applicants should not treat the list as a discipline-wise allocation.
Service Conditions and Caveats
- Doctoral registration: Selected fellows will register for the PhD programme with JNU, New Delhi, while carrying out their research at IUAC.
- Joining requirement: You must be ready to join within one week after the result is announced. A delayed joining may conflict with the programme schedule.
- Coursework: Every selected student must complete coursework for two semesters after joining, in line with UGC norms.
- Accommodation: IUAC states that hostel accommodation will be provided to selected students.
- Shortlisting: Meeting the minimum academic conditions does not create an automatic right to be called. IUAC may shortlist applicants before the assessment stage.
- Relaxation: Normal relaxation in the eligibility conditions applies under UGC guidelines; the notice does not provide a separate category-wise table.
- Accuracy of details: Check every entry before sending the form because incorrect or incomplete information can affect your application.
Responsibilities
- Conduct accelerator or ion-beam based experiments in the assigned research area
- Operate research instruments under laboratory and safety procedures
- Record experimental observations and keep organised research data
- Analyse results using suitable physics and computational methods
- Complete doctoral coursework and research milestones on schedule
- Prepare technical reports, presentations, and research manuscripts
- Work with supervisors, facility scientists, and visiting university researchers
