About This Job
Apply for 1 Post-Doctoral Fellow post in IITGN. PhD in Mechanical/Aerospace/Chemical eligible. Salary: Rs 72,000-84,000. Last date: 4 Oct 2026.
IITGN Post-Doctoral Fellow Recruitment 2026: Overview
Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN) is looking for a Post-Doctoral Fellow in its Department of Mechanical Engineering. The post sits in the Computational Combustion and ML (CCML) Lab run by Prof. Shubhangi Bansude, under the project Physics-guided machine learning for turbulent combustion (Advertisement No. IP/70092/Advt0314).
This is a temporary, project-based position handled by the institute's Research and Development Office. If you have finished a PhD that mixes computational fluid dynamics (CFD) with machine learning, the work here lines up closely with that background. You can apply even if you have only submitted your thesis and are still waiting for the degree.
The research centres on turbulent combustion modelling, especially flamelet-based models for Large-eddy Simulation (LES). You will generate high-fidelity data from simulations of reacting flows and use it to train physics-guided neural networks and mixture-of-experts models that respect combustion physics. The final models are plugged back into CFD solvers and checked for accuracy, robustness and numerical stability across different flow conditions.
The lab lists a few skills that will make your application stronger: OpenFOAM experience, a solid grasp of fluid mechanics and turbulence, work on high-performance computing (HPC) clusters, and good Python coding. Clear communication also matters, since you will explain your work to students and the wider team.
Service Conditions and Caveats
- Engagement: The appointment is for a fixed term of one year under the project and follows institute norms, not funding-agency norms.
- Academic record: You need at least 60% marks (or an equivalent grade) from your undergraduate degree onwards, and at least 55% in both Class 10 and Class 12. Candidates who miss these cut-offs at any level are not eligible.
- Shortlisting: Meeting the minimum eligibility does not guarantee a call for selection. IITGN may apply a higher cut-off and may decide not to fill the post in this round.
- Mentoring and teaching: You will co-mentor graduate and undergraduate students in the lab, and teaching work is encouraged if you want to build your academic profile.
- Work style: The lab describes itself as a fast-changing, growth-focused setting. It wants someone willing to learn, able to work independently, and comfortable working with the PI and the research team.
Application Submission Notes
Applications go through IITGN's project staff recruitment portal. Fill in every section and upload the documents the portal asks for, because incomplete applications will not be considered.
For questions about the research work or the post, write to Prof. Shubhangi Bansude at shubhangi.bansude@iitgn.ac.in.
Responsibilities
- Develop and implement flamelet-based combustion models for turbulent flames in OpenFOAM
- Run DNS and LES of canonical reacting flows to build and analyse high-fidelity datasets

- Couple the new models with CFD solvers and test them for accuracy, stability and generalisability
- Co-mentor graduate and undergraduate students working in the CCML Lab
- Work with the principal investigator and team on research outputs and project progress
