About This Job
Apply for 2 Post-Doctoral Fellow posts in IITGN. PhD in Metallurgy/Materials eligible. Salary: Rs 72,000-84,000. Last date: 21 Sep 2026.
IITGN Post-Doctoral Fellow Recruitment 2026: Overview
Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IITGN) is hiring Post-Doctoral Fellows in its Department of Materials Engineering through the institute's Research & Development Office. The posts sit in the research group of Prof. Avinash Hariharan and support a project titled "Alloy design using additive manufacturing". This is a temporary, project-based engagement, not a permanent faculty or staff post, so it suits a fresh PhD holder who wants hands-on research time in metal 3D printing before moving on to a faculty or industry role.
The work is laboratory-heavy. You will be printing high-strength metallic alloys and studying how the printing process shapes their microstructure and final properties. The group also expects you to turn your results into papers in reputed journals, so a publication record and the ability to work on your own matter a lot here.
The group is looking for someone who already understands metallurgy and microstructure engineering and is comfortable in a characterization lab. Comfort with Python for data analysis or modelling is a clear plus, as is a habit of explaining research well in writing and in talks. Since IITGN runs this post on a one-year project appointment, treat it as a focused research stint on a single well-defined problem.
Service Conditions and Caveats
- Nature of post: Temporary position tied to the research project; it does not lead to a regular post at IIT Gandhinagar.
- Eligibility norms: The advertisement follows Institute norms, not funding-agency norms, for qualifications and experience.
- Academic record: IITGN expects a consistently good record from school through your highest degree; the minimum percentages are listed in the eligibility field.
- Thesis submitted is enough to apply: You can apply once your PhD thesis is submitted, though an awarded degree with additive manufacturing experience is preferred.
- Shortlisting: Meeting the minimum criteria does not guarantee a call. The institute may apply a higher cut-off and may choose not to fill the posts in this round.
Application Submission Notes
Applications go through the IITGN project staff recruitment portal. Along with the online form, keep a detailed CV ready and add the contact details of two referees — the advertisement asks for both.
For questions about the research work or the position, you can write to the principal investigator, Prof. Avinash Hariharan, at avinash.hariharan@iitgn.ac.in. Quote the advertisement number IP/10515/Advt0317 in your email so your query reaches the right file.
The window for this advertisement is short, so prepare your CV and referee details before you start the online form. Candidates who have Python-based data analysis or modelling skills should highlight them clearly, since the group lists them as an advantage.
Responsibilities
- Carry out additive manufacturing (metal 3D printing) of high-strength metallic alloys
- Run multi-scale experimental characterization of printed alloy samples
- Study how process settings affect microstructure and mechanical properties
- Analyse experimental data and build models, preferably using Python
- Plan and conduct independent research within the alloy design project
- Write and publish research papers in reputed peer-reviewed journals
- Present findings clearly to the principal investigator and research group
Eligibility Criteria
Minimum Qualification
Ph.D. (degree awarded or thesis submitted) in Metallurgical/Materials Engineering or a related discipline, with a minimum of 60% or equivalent in graduation and above, and 55% or equivalent in Class 10 and Class 12.
Preferred Qualification
Ph.D. degree awarded with experience in additive manufacturing and in process-microstructure-property correlation; track record of publications in reputed peer-reviewed journals.
Required Skills
Expertise in metallurgy and materials science; strong foundation in microstructure engineering; familiarity with experimental characterization; data analysis with Python and modelling skills (advantage); ability to conduct independent research; excelle...
