IIT Roorkee JRF Recruitment 2026: Overview
Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IIT Roorkee) is hiring a Junior Research Fellow (JRF) for a Ministry of Mines-sponsored project in the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering. Led by Prof. Smitirupa Biswal, the study aims to recover potash values from nepheline syenite and feldspar. The work sits at the intersection of mineral processing, materials characterisation and process development, with a resource-recovery question at the centre of the project.
The study is built around experimental investigation rather than a purely desk-based exercise. Mineral samples need to be examined, tested through suitable treatment routes and characterised so that changes can be understood at each stage. Flowsheet development is a central project outcome, which means individual experiments must eventually connect into a logical recovery sequence. Reliable observations and consistent laboratory records will be important when different routes are compared.
Nepheline syenite and feldspar provide the project’s two stated source materials. The fellow’s work will help the group understand how potash-bearing values respond during processing and where a proposed route succeeds or needs refinement. Characterisation evidence supports those decisions by showing what is happening to the material, while the flowsheet turns separate findings into an organised process concept. This creates a research setting where laboratory detail and the wider process objective have to stay connected.
The project also brings together metallurgy, materials science and chemistry perspectives. Process thinking explains how the recovery stages relate, while materials knowledge helps interpret mineral behaviour and experimental results. The Ministry of Mines sponsorship gives this work a clear applied context, and the host department provides the academic setting for documenting the methods and findings. The notice also points to a possible route into doctoral study for the selected fellow, although it does not promise admission.
Service Conditions and Caveats
- Project appointment: The JRF position is tied to sponsored research and is not a regular institute cadre post.
- Ph.D. possibility: The selected fellow may receive an opportunity for Ph.D. admission; the notice presents this only as a possibility.
- Equal merit preference: The advertisement gives preference to SC and ST candidates when qualifications and experience are equal.
- Travel support: No TA or DA is payable for attending the interview.
- Research setting: The work is based in IIT Roorkee’s Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering under the principal investigator.
Application Submission Notes
Send the application to the principal investigator’s email address printed in the direct IIT Roorkee PDF. The general project-jobs page is only a listing page and is not the application form for this vacancy. The direct project advertisement is the authoritative source for the recipient details and the required plain-paper format.
Use the PDF itself when copying the recipient address because the extracted text does not render that email clearly. Your message and attachment names should make the JRF potash-recovery project easy to identify. Keep the contact information in your application current so the project team can reach you.
Responsibilities
- Conduct experiments to recover potash values from selected mineral sources
- Prepare and handle nepheline syenite and feldspar samples carefully
- Run material characterisation studies for the recovery process
- Analyse experimental observations and compare treatment routes
- Develop a practical flowsheet from the tested process stages
- Keep clear laboratory records and organise research data
- Report progress and discuss findings with the principal investigator
