ICMR Senior Consultant Recruitment 2026: Overview

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) is engaging Senior Consultants (Scientific Non-Medical) for its Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) Coordination Unit at ICMR Headquarters, New Delhi. Both are non-institutional, project-based positions under short-term projects, so they run on a temporary contract rather than as regular ICMR posts.

The two positions carry the same title but look for very different profiles — one wants a seasoned public-health and AMR programme specialist, the other a senior data science and AI/ML professional. These are senior roles meant for people well into their careers, and the notice counts a PhD, MD/MS or MVSc towards the experience requirement, while an MPH earns no experience credit.

Posts and Disciplines

• Senior Consultant – AMR and public health profile: for science, engineering, pharmacy, public health or AYUSH graduates who have worked in public health programmes and know antimicrobial resistance and antimicrobial stewardship well. The notice also wants experience of managing large multicentric projects, handling surveillance platforms and analytics tools, validating microbiological data, and writing reports and publications.
• Senior Consultant – AI/ML and data analytics profile: for Computer Science, IT, AI/ML, Data Science or Computational Biology graduates who have built or deployed AI/ML models, predictive analytics or automated data-processing tools. Hands-on coding in Python, R, Java or SQL and experience of running databases, dashboards or analytical platforms on large datasets are expected.

Both positions ask for knowledge of government health initiatives and a willingness to travel. You must send a separate application for each position if you want to be considered for both.

Service Conditions and Caveats

• Tenure: One year or the life of the project, whichever is shorter. Any extension depends on your performance, project tenure, funds and approval, and the total of any project positions with ICMR is capped at five years.
• Serving government staff: People already in regular time-scale service in any government department or organisation cannot apply.
• No regular-staff benefits: Provident Fund, pension, LTC, medical claims and staff quarters do not apply, and the engagement gives no claim to a regular ICMR post.
• Posting: You will normally work at the study site but can be sent to any part of the country for the research work.
• Pay may change: The consolidated amount is project-specific and can vary with the funding agency's sanction.
• No PhD registration: Project staff are not allowed to register for a PhD during the engagement.
• No TA/DA: You pay your own travel and stay for the written test and personal discussion.
• Reserved categories: Bring a latest caste validity certificate; OBC candidates need a current non-creamy layer certificate and PwD candidates a medical board certificate showing at least 40% disability.
