About This Job

The Debts Recovery Appellate Tribunal (DRAT) Mumbai, under the Ministry of Finance, is hiring 6 Law Researchers on a contract basis. If you are a law graduate aged 21 to 30 years with at least 55% marks, you can earn a fixed monthly remuneration of Rs. 60,000 while working with senior judicial officers across Maharashtra and Gujarat. This vacancy circular covers one Law Researcher post each at DRAT Mumbai, DRT-1 & DRT-2 Ahmedabad, DRT-1 & DRT-3 Mumbai, and DRT-Aurangabad. The contract starts at one year and can be extended up to three years based on performance. You will assist Chairpersons and Presiding Officers in case research, judgment preparation, and court note-taking — a strong stepping stone if you want to build a career in financial law and recovery jurisprudence.

Who Can Apply?

  • Educational Qualification: Bachelor's degree in Law (LL.B) or integrated Law Degree, or LL.M with minimum 55% marks from a college, university, or institution recognised by the Bar Council of India for enrolment as an Advocate.
  • Computer Skills: You need a sound knowledge of computer applications, including the ability to retrieve information from search engines and legal databases.
  • Other: You must have absolute integrity, honesty, and good moral character. You cannot have any pending criminal case or conviction.

Age Limit

  • Minimum age: 21 years
  • Maximum age: 30 years
  • Reference date: Age is calculated as on the last date of receipt of applications (11 May 2026).

Salary

  • Fixed monthly honorarium: Rs. 60,000 per month (revised from Rs. 30,000 by Department of Financial Services order dated 16 May 2025 for new appointees on contract basis).
  • Paid leave: 12 days per year, with a maximum of 3 days in any single month.
  • No allowances: No TA / DA is paid for attending the interview or for travel during duty.
  • Dress code: You will wear a black coat and tie on duty along with a photo identity card issued by the respective DRAT / DRT.

Selection Process

  1. Online application screening — Applications received via email will be placed before the Chairperson of DRAT Mumbai. Shortlisting may be done based on academic record and extracurricular achievements.
  2. Personal interview — Shortlisted candidates appear before the Selection Committee headed by the Chairperson of DRAT, with the Presiding Officer of the DRT and a representative of the Department of Financial Services as members.
  3. Engagement order — The selected candidate must accept the engagement letter within one month of issue, otherwise the offer is treated as withdrawn.

Responsibilities

  • Read case files and prepare case notes, including chronology of events for each matter.
  • Identify facts, legal issues, and questions that may arise during hearings.
  • Attend court during hearings, take notes of arguments and citations from both sides.
  • Research case law, books, and articles to assist the Chairperson and Presiding Officer in preparing judgments.
  • Prepare brief case summaries as directed by the Chairperson, DRAT or Presiding Officer, DRT.
  • Assist judicial officers in drafting speeches and academic papers on financial law topics.
  • Maintain absolute confidentiality of case-related information and court deliberations.
  • Submit a daily attendance record on which monthly honorarium will be calculated.

Eligibility Criteria

Bachelor's degree in Law (LL.B) or integrated Law Degree / LL.M with minimum 55% marks from an institution recognised by the Bar Council of India for enrolment as an Advocate.

Preferred Qualification

Sound knowledge of computer applications and ability to retrieve information from search engines and legal databases.
