IITD JRF Tropical Cyclones Recruitment 2026: Overview

Indian Institute of Technology Delhi (IIT Delhi) is engaging a Junior Research Fellow for a Centre for Atmospheric Sciences project on tropical-cyclone energetics in the Bay of Bengal. Funded by the Ministry of Earth Sciences, the study aims to improve understanding of rapid intensity changes and examine how cyclone behaviour may shift in a warming climate. This is a project-linked research role, suited to someone who wants hands-on experience with a scientifically and socially important weather problem.

The project connects atmospheric science, cyclone dynamics and climate projections. Your research contribution will support a broader effort to understand why some storms strengthen quickly, a challenge that matters for forecasting and coastal preparedness. The appointment is contractual and tied to the life of the research project, not a regular IIT Delhi position.

Service Conditions and Caveats

• Project tenure: the appointment is made on a consolidated fellowship and may be renewed yearly up to the project duration, whichever comes first.
• National eligibility test: the notice accepts the prescribed NET route for a postgraduate basic-science degree or a graduate/postgraduate professional degree. The NET/GATE condition may be relaxed for graduates of centrally funded technical institutes with a CGPA above 8.000 or 80% aggregate marks.
• SC/ST marks relaxation: IIT Delhi may grant a five-per-cent relaxation in marks to applicants from these categories.
• Current IIT Delhi staff: an institute employee must route the application through the proper channel before appearing.
• Retired employees: if a retired or superannuated government employee is selected, pay is fixed under the prevailing IRD rules.
