UPSC Engineering Services Recruitment 2027: Overview

Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) is conducting the Engineering Services Examination for regular engineering posts across participating central government services. The examination covers Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, and Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering, bringing several departments into a common recruitment process.

This is the 2027 examination cycle, with applications opening in the preceding year. The services span public works, roads, railways, water, power, communications and defence-related engineering organisations.

Posts and Disciplines

• Civil Engineering: Includes Central Engineering Service, roads, Survey of India, Border Roads, water engineering, defence engineering, skill development and railway civil or stores posts.
• Mechanical Engineering: Covers services linked to geological survey, naval material and armament, aeronautical quality assurance, Border Roads, railways, defence, water, power and central electrical and mechanical engineering.
• Electrical Engineering: Includes central electrical and mechanical engineering, power engineering, naval material and armament, defence quality assurance, skill development, railways and defence engineering.
• Electronics & Telecommunication Engineering: Covers radio regulation, telecommunications, naval material and armament, skill development, railway signalling or stores, power engineering and Junior Telecom Officer posts.

Service Conditions and Caveats

• Service preferences: Your rank, preferences and the posts available determine allocation. A preference alone does not guarantee a particular service.
• Choice of discipline: You may enter through only one engineering category. Think carefully about that choice when completing the examination-specific form.
• Provisional candidature: Admission remains provisional until UPSC checks your claims. Receiving an admit card does not mean all application details have been accepted as correct.
• Reservation: The exercise includes central government reservation provisions. Requests to switch category after applying are restricted by the notice, so choose your category carefully.
• Changes after submission: You cannot withdraw the submitted application or correct its fields. Editing your Universal Registration Number profile affects later applications and does not update an application already submitted.
• Serving employees: Government and public enterprise employees must inform their office or department that they have applied. An employer's refusal of permission can lead to cancellation.
• Examination centres: Most centres have capacity limits and are allotted in application order. UPSC can change centres, and requests from applicants for a centre change are not accepted.
• Recruitment scope: The announced staffing requirement is approximate and may change. Consult the participating-service list when deciding which appointments you would prefer.
• Application records: Keep both your Universal Registration Number and examination-specific application number for later communication. They serve different purposes within the portal.
• Paper copies: UPSC does not ask you to send a printed application. Keep your registered email active because the commission may communicate electronically throughout the process.
