JNPA Pilot Recruitment 2026: Overview
Jawaharlal Nehru Port Authority (JNPA) is engaging experienced mariners as contract Pilots in its Marine Department at Nhava Sheva. You can choose between Scheme I and Scheme II, which use different duty and incentive arrangements but share the same pilotage training and licensing framework. This is a specialist waterfront role for officers who are ready to move from sea command into port navigation and vessel-movement work.
The engagement begins with trainee pilot status while you complete port-specific preparation, including training with Mumbai Port Authority and the course conducted by Indian Maritime University. After the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways issues the pilotage licence, you move into operational pilotage across the JNPA and MbPA waterfronts. Your Master (Foreign Going) competency certificate and pilotage licence must remain valid throughout the engagement.
Service Conditions and Caveats
- Contract period: The initial engagement runs for three years and may be renewed for further three-year terms by mutual agreement, with a break between contracts.
- Training: You remain a trainee until licensing is complete. The training period is normally six months or longer and includes supervised port exposure.
- Duty pattern: Scheme I uses rotating day and night shifts, while Scheme II uses an availability cycle planned with the Deputy Conservator or Harbour Master. Operational needs can change the approved schedule.
- Movement responsibility: You must complete vessel movements allotted by the Dock Master, Harbour Master or Deputy Conservator. Refusing an assigned movement without a valid reason can lead to a deduction.
- Security retention: JNPA keeps part of the monthly package during the first contract. Leaving before the minimum service period or failing to give the required notice can result in forfeiture.
- Insurance and uniform: Accident-insurance cover is compulsory before boarding a vessel, and the Marine Department uniform must be worn during pilotage duty.
- Port facilities: Transport is available within the port area and up to the township. Guest-house support follows JNPA rules, while township accommodation may be offered on a chargeable basis if available.
- Employment status: This contract does not create a claim to the rights or status of a regular JNPA employee. Conduct, discipline and professional-negligence matters remain under port rules.
