IREL Chairman and Managing Director Recruitment 2026: Overview

IREL (India) Limited (IREL), a Schedule B Miniratna Category I company under the Department of Atomic Energy, is choosing its next Chairman and Managing Director to guide a specialised minerals business. The company works across mining, mineral separation, rare-earth extraction, refining, metals and permanent magnets, so this is a board-level leadership role spanning the full value chain rather than a single plant function. You would be accountable to the board and the Government of India for company performance, with responsibility for both current operations and IREL's contribution to clean-energy materials. The defining feature is the breadth of the portfolio: a suitable leader needs to connect technical operations, commercial priorities, capital projects and people decisions.

Service Conditions and Caveats

  • Appointment term: The board appointment runs for five years from joining, or until superannuation or further government orders, whichever comes first. This is a regular senior appointment with a defined tenure, not a project engagement.
  • Current employment: You must hold a regular position both when you apply and when the interview takes place. People working only on a contractual or ad-hoc basis do not meet this condition.
  • Applicant pool: The notice accepts suitably placed professionals from CPSEs, Central Government Group A services, the Armed Forces, All India Services, public-sector banks, financial institutions and autonomous bodies. It also covers qualifying state public enterprises, private companies, joint ventures and national or state cooperative federations.
  • Organisation size: Applicants coming from a state enterprise, private company, joint venture or federation must work in an organisation meeting the notified turnover benchmark. The calculation uses the average audited turnover for the three relevant financial years.
  • Private-sector preference: Experience in a listed company gets preference when private-company applications are considered. PESB also arranges private-company, joint-venture and federation applicants by the turnover of their current organisation.
  • Seniority: Government officers need the prescribed substantive seniority, while applicants from state enterprises, private companies, joint ventures and federations must already work at board level. A title gained only through non-functional upgradation does not meet the government-officer condition.
  • Immediate absorption: Central Government and Armed Forces officers, All India Services members, and officers from public-sector banks, financial institutions or autonomous bodies are considered only if they can move on an immediate-absorption basis.
  • Joining commitment: Your online form must include an undertaking that you will join if selected. Withdrawing after the interview or after an offer can lead to a two-year bar from consideration for board-level CPSE posts, with the exact scope depending on your present employer group.

Responsibilities

  • Lead IREL's corporate strategy across mining, mineral processing and rare-earth businesses
  • Set performance priorities and monitor delivery against the company's approved objectives
  • Guide investment, production, finance, marketing and major project decisions
  • Report company performance and key risks to the Board and the Government of India
  • Oversee safe, compliant and efficient operations across the rare-earth value chain
  • Build leadership capability and align the workforce with long-term business needs
  • Strengthen partnerships that support technology, markets and clean-energy materials
