Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) is recruiting a Health System Strengthening Expert, Data Analyst and District Nodal Consultants for its Technical Assistance for Maternal and Newborn Health (MNH) outcomes project in Assam. Funded by the Gates Foundation, the project supports the Government of Assam in improving care for mothers and newborns. GMCH acts as the nodal agency, with particular attention to districts facing a high burden of poor health outcomes.

The project uses a state-and-district support model. A state-level Project Management Unit (PMU) brings together technical specialists, while district consultants help put that support into practice with local health teams. Your work would connect public health planning, facility support and evidence from health data.

Posts and Disciplines

• Health System Strengthening Expert: This role supports the systems behind maternal and newborn care, including referral arrangements, health facilities and programme planning.
• Data Analyst (Monitoring and Evaluation): This role focuses on public health information, digital reporting and evidence that helps programme teams make decisions.
• District Nodal Consultant: These roles connect the PMU with district authorities and health facilities at selected zonal sites in Jorhat, Nagaon, Kamrup, Cachar and Dhubri.

Post-wise Duties

Health System Strengthening Expert

You will help state and district authorities improve maternal and newborn health services. The work includes reviewing gaps in infrastructure, staffing, supplies and referral transport, then helping teams develop practical responses. You will also support research with medical colleges or research institutes and use maternal and infant death reviews to guide improvements.

Data Analyst

You will turn raw programme data into usable evidence for health decisions. The role includes connecting information from existing platforms, developing digital tracking and referral tools, preparing monthly reports and sharing findings with programme partners. You will work closely with the National Health Mission in Assam.

District Nodal Consultant

You will visit facilities, identify service gaps and help district teams improve care delivery. You will support district programme planning, collect and report data, and help introduce government-approved procedures. Alongside the Quality Consultant, you will support health-worker capacity building and record the challenges facilities face.

Service Conditions and Caveats

• Tenure: Each role starts with a one-year contract, which may be extended up to the project period.
• Travel: The expert and analyst roles involve travel across Assam for technical support, programme reviews and data collection. District consultants must be ready for extensive travel within their allotted district when needed.
• Working relationships: The project team works through the PMU in coordination with state and district health authorities. District consultants also work with the Quality Consultant on facility improvement.
