BHU Research Scientist and Lab Technician Recruitment 2026: Overview

Banaras Hindu University (BHU) is recruiting a Project Research Scientist-II (Non-Medical) and a Lab Technician III for molecular-oncology work in the Department of Surgical Oncology, Institute of Medical Sciences, Varanasi. The two roles belong to separate but closely related research activities led through the DIAMOnDS laboratory, where laboratory findings are connected with cancer diagnosis and clinical research. Both engagements are project-based, so this opening suits you if you want hands-on experience in a medical-research setting rather than a regular university appointment.

The scientist role supports an ICMR-funded gallbladder-cancer project built around a 39-gene RT-qPCR diagnostic panel and liquid-biopsy signatures. The technician role supports the Advanced Molecular Oncology Diagnostic Services centre, which provides molecular-pathology laboratory support under the Department of Health Research. Together, the posts cover research planning, sample workflows, assay work and day-to-day laboratory operations.

Posts and Disciplines

  • Project Research Scientist-II (Non-Medical): a research-led role focused on biotechnology, biochemistry, molecular biology, genetics or life sciences, with a strong publication and molecular-assay component.
  • Lab Technician III: a practical laboratory role for medical-laboratory or biological-science backgrounds, supporting diagnostic and molecular-pathology techniques.

Post-wise Duties

Project Research Scientist-II

You will help design and standardise tissue and liquid-biopsy DNA/RNA workflows, work with RT-qPCR and droplet digital PCR, and keep assay-quality records. You will also support molecular-data review, standard operating procedures and coordination between the research laboratory and clinical team.

Lab Technician III

You will handle routine molecular-pathology laboratory work, prepare and process samples, and support techniques such as IHC, IFC, nucleic-acid isolation, RT-PCR, FISH and ELISA. Depending on the laboratory schedule, you may also assist with NGS library preparation, equipment readiness and accurate result records.

Service Conditions and Caveats

  • Project tenure: each appointment starts as a one-year contract and may be renewed only if your performance and the project continuation support it.
  • Co-terminus engagement: the posts end with their respective projects, and selection does not create a right to regular employment in BHU, ICMR, DHR or the Government of India.
  • Notice period: either side may end the engagement with one month's notice under the stated project terms.
  • Benefits: provident fund, CCA, leave travel concession and medical-claim benefits are not available for these project posts.
  • Travel support: the university will not pay TA or DA for attending the assessment, joining the post or leaving the engagement.
  • Workplace conduct: selected staff must follow the conduct and discipline rules applicable at the Institute of Medical Sciences.

Application Submission Notes

Your hard-copy application must reach Prof. Manoj Pandey, Principal Investigator, DIAMOnDS Lab, Molecular Biology Building, Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi 221005, Uttar Pradesh. The two notices use different application formats, so make sure the post name and the correct project details are clear on your papers.

Email applications are not accepted. If you already work for a government, autonomous or private institution, keep the employer permission needed for the interview ready. Incomplete applications can be rejected, and you should check the BHU recruitment website for any later instruction or amendment.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and run molecular-oncology research workflows for the assigned project
  • Process tissue and liquid-biopsy samples using approved laboratory methods
