Selection Process

You will go through three stages to get selected. First, a Preliminary Examination conducted on OMR sheets with no negative marking — you need 45% to qualify (40% for SC/ST/PwBD). If you clear the prelims, you move to the Main Examination, which tests your knowledge of law, Hindi, and English through descriptive papers. Finally, qualified candidates face a personal interview. The merit list is prepared based on combined marks from the Main Exam and Interview.

Preparation Tips for RHC Civil Judge Exam

  1. Download the official syllabus from hcraj.nic.in — the Preliminary Exam syllabus is in Schedule-VIII and Main Exam in Schedule-IX of the Rajasthan Judicial Service Rules, 2010
  2. Focus on Law papers — they carry the maximum weightage in the Main Exam, covering both civil and criminal law
  3. Practice previous year papers — available on the Rajasthan High Court website under "Previous Year Exam Papers"
  4. Strengthen your Hindi writing skills — the Language Paper I tests Hindi in Devnagari script, which is a scoring subject

Responsibilities

  • Preside over civil and criminal cases in district and subordinate courts across Rajasthan
  • Hear arguments from both parties and deliver judgments based on evidence and applicable law
  • Manage court proceedings, maintain order, and ensure timely disposal of cases
  • Issue warrants, summons, and interim orders as required under law
  • Conduct matrimonial, rent, and other civil dispute hearings
  • Supervise court staff and ensure proper maintenance of judicial records

Eligibility Criteria

Minimum Qualification

Bachelor of Laws (LL.B. Professional) from a recognized university in India

Preferred Qualification

Knowledge of Rajasthani dialects and social customs of Rajasthan

Exam Pattern

The selection involves three stages: Preliminary Examination, Main Examination, and Interview.

Preliminary Examination

The Preliminary Exam is conducted on OMR Answer Sheets (objective type). There is no negative marking for wrong answers. To qualify for the Main Exam, SC/ST/PwBD candidates need a minimum of 40% marks, while all other categories need 45% marks.

Main Examination

The Main Exam consists of descriptive papers covering:

  • Law Paper I — Civil Law subjects
  • Law Paper II — Criminal Law subjects
  • Language Paper I (Hindi) — Hindi in Devnagari Script
  • Language Paper II (English) — English legal comprehension and drafting

Interview

The final merit list is prepared based on the combined marks of Main Examination and Interview. For SC/ST/PwBD candidates, the qualifying threshold is 176 out of 450 marks (Main + Interview combined). For all other candidates, it is 193.5 out of 450 marks.

  • Citizenship: Must be a citizen of India
  • Maximum Children: Must not have more than two children on/after the date of commencement of the Rules

  • Character: Must not have been dismissed/removed from service, convicted of moral turpitude, or debarred by any court/PSC
