NIT Rourkela is hiring 1 Project Fellow (Junior Research Fellow) for a SERB(ANRF)-funded biosensor research project in the Department of Biotechnology and Medical Engineering. National Institute of Technology Rourkela (NIT Rourkela), an Institute of National Importance under the Ministry of Education, Government of India, has released a notification for 1 Junior Research Fellow (Project Fellow) post under its Sponsored Research, Industrial Consultancy and Continuing Education (SRICCE) cell (Advt. No. NITR/SR/2026/Advt.-26BM025/L/049). The position is attached to a SERB (ANRF) Core Research Grant-funded project titled "Continuous non-invasive, wearable multi-metabolite and inflammation sensing platform for metabolic profiling and disease analytics", led by Prof. Mirza Khalid Baig and Prof. A. Thirugnanam of the Department of Biotechnology and Medical Engineering, and runs until 15 June 2029. The selected candidate is also expected to enroll for a PhD program at the Institute, subject to meeting the admission criteria, making this a strong launchpad for a research career in biosensors and biomedical engineering.
Who Can Apply?
- Qualification: First Class Postgraduate Degree / M.Tech / MPharm (minimum 60% marks or CGPA 6.5), including integrated PG degrees, in Engineering or Basic Sciences.
- GATE Requirement: A valid GATE/GPAT/NET score is mandatory for postgraduate degree holders.
- Alternate Route: A First Class 4-year Graduate Degree (minimum 60% or CGPA 6.5) in Engineering/IT/CS/Pharmacy also works, provided you have a valid GATE/GPAT/NET score.
- For MSc Holders: A valid GATE/GPAT/CSIR-NET JRF score is compulsory.
- Preferred: M.Tech/B.Tech in Biomedical Engineering, M.Pharm, M.Tech in Electronics Engineering, or M.Tech/MSc in Biotechnology/Chemistry with a valid GATE/GPAT score.
- Experience: Prior work with biosensors, AI, bio-electronics, electrochemistry, or diabetes-related research is a plus.
- All educational qualifications and certificates must be from a recognized Board/University, and your experience is counted from the date of completing the minimum essential qualification.
Salary
- You will get Rs. 37,000 per month in the first and second year of the project.
- The stipend increases to Rs. 42,000 per month in the third year.
Selection Process (No Written Exam)
Selection for this Project Fellow post is based on:
- Screening of Applications: Your qualifications and GATE/GPAT/NET score will be checked against the eligibility criteria.
- Interview: Shortlisted candidates will be called for an interview by the Department of Biotechnology and Medical Engineering. The interview date will be notified later.

Responsibilities
- Develop and test wearable biosensors in the lab
- Build electronic data readout and testing platforms for sensors
- Prepare and maintain project documentation
- Coordinate with clinical and manufacturing partner organizations on collaborative tasks
- Present research findings at conferences and project review meetings
- Pursue PhD enrollment at the Institute alongside project work

M.Tech/B.Tech in Biomedical Engineering, M.Pharm, M.Tech in Electronics Engineering, or M.Tech/MSc in Biotechnology/Chemistry with valid GATE/GPAT score; prior experience with biosensors/AI/bio-electronics/electrochemistry/diabetes research preferred
