Who Can Apply?

Rural Home Guard

  • Qualification: Minimum Class 7 pass and above
  • Domicile: You must be a permanent resident of the block in Dhanbad district where you are applying
  • You need to upload a domicile certificate issued by the competent authority in your online application

Urban Home Guard

  • Qualification: Minimum Class 10 (Matric) pass and above
  • Domicile: You must be a regular resident of the urban area (Nagar Nigam Dhanbad or Nagar Parishad Chirkunda) where you are applying

Urban Technical Home Guard

  • You must be skilled in a technical trade and should be currently working or experienced in that trade
  • Technical trades include: Electrician, Engineer, Advocate, Teacher, Nurse, Computer Operator, Typist, Line-sensory Driver (LMV/HMV), Cook, Carpenter, Cobbler, Washer, Tailor, Electrician (Bijli Mistri), Gardener, Plumber etc.

Salary / Daily Allowance

  • Daily duty allowance: Rs. 1,088 per day (revised as per Supreme Court order, August 2024)
  • Monthly earnings (approx): Rs. 28,288 (for 26 duty days) to Rs. 32,640 (for 30 duty days)
  • You get paid only for the days you are called for duty — this is not a fixed monthly salary
  • Important: Home Guard is a voluntary service, not a regular government job. Members are called for duty as needed and paid a daily allowance
  • Additional benefits include uniform, medical allowance, travel allowance, and training allowance during duty

Physical Standards

These standards apply to both Rural and Urban Home Guard candidates.

Height

  • Male (General/OBC/BC): Minimum 162 cm
  • Male (SC/ST): Minimum 157 cm
  • Female (all categories): Minimum 148 cm

Chest (Male Only)

  • General/OBC/BC: Minimum 79 cm
  • SC/ST: Minimum 76 cm

Selection Process

The selection will follow the process laid down by the Home Department, Government of Jharkhand (Notification No. 5442, dated 20.10.2014).

  1. Physical Measurement Test (PMT): Height and chest measurement as per the standards above. You must meet the minimum requirements to go further.
  2. Physical Efficiency Test (PET): Includes 1-mile run, high jump, long jump, and shot put. Marks are awarded based on performance:
    • 1-Mile Run (Male): 5 minutes or less = 20 marks; 5-6 minutes = 10 marks; more than 6 minutes = disqualified
    • 1-Mile Run (Female): 8 minutes or less = 20 marks; 8-10 minutes = 10 marks; more than 10 minutes = disqualified
    • High Jump, Long Jump, Shot Put: Marks awarded on a scale of 5-10 based on performance
  3. Hindi Writing Test: For candidates who pass the physical test. Rural candidates are tested at Class 7 level and Urban candidates at Class 10 level. This is a qualifying exam — 100 marks, minimum 30 to pass.
  4. Technical Proficiency Test (Urban Technical candidates only): Tests your technical skill. Also qualifying — 100 marks, minimum 30 to pass.
  5. Merit List: A merit list will be prepared based on the marks from all stages.
  6. Medical Examination: Selected candidates must pass a medical checkup.
  7. Character Verification: Police verification of your character and antecedents.
  8. Basic Training: After clearing all stages, you will be sent for Home Guard basic training as directed by the Jharkhand Home Guard HQ, Ranchi.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the local police in maintaining law and order during festivals, elections, and public events
  • Handle crowd control and manage traffic during large gatherings and emergencies
  • Keep watch at important government buildings, offices, and public installations during duty hours
  • Work alongside police and civil administration during natural disasters, floods, and relief operations
  • Follow all instructions given by the District Commandant and senior officers during duty
  • Assist in search operations, patrolling, and night watch duties as assigned
  • Manage entry/exit points at public venues and check passes or permits when directed
  • Prepare duty reports and maintain records of incidents observed during your shift

Exam Pattern
