IITR JRF Earth Sciences Recruitment 2026: Overview

Indian Institute of Technology Roorkee (IITR) is engaging a Junior Research Fellow in its Department of Earth Sciences for an ANRF-sponsored study of a geothermal source beneath the Chamoli area of Uttarakhand. The project uses magnetotelluric and electrical resistivity studies to investigate what lies below the survey area, so the role combines field measurements with careful interpretation of geophysical data.

You would work with the principal investigator, Dr Arun Singh, on a project that runs through its planned research period. The clearest fit is a geophysics or earth-science candidate who is comfortable moving between survey work, data processing and technical interpretation; knowledge of MT or ERT is especially useful. The notice also says the selected researcher may get an opportunity to seek PhD admission, but it does not promise admission as part of the appointment.

Service Conditions and Caveats

• Project tenure: The engagement is linked to the research project and is planned for three years, ending with the project. It is a project position rather than a regular institute appointment.
• Field component: The work includes data acquisition in the Chamoli survey area as well as processing and inversion of the collected field data. You should be ready for practical outdoor survey work as well as computer-based analysis back at the department. Keeping the acquisition notes and processed datasets aligned matters because the interpretation depends on traceable field records.
• Nationality: The notice limits the project position to Indian nationals.
• Equal-merit preference: IITR states that preference will be given to SC or ST candidates when qualifications and experience are equal.
• Travel support: The institute will not pay TA or DA for attending the interview, so you should plan your travel to Roorkee accordingly.
• Research pathway: A PhD opportunity may become available to the selected researcher, subject to the institute's separate admission process and requirements.
