Indian Institute of Technology (Indian School of Mines), Dhanbad (IIT ISM Dhanbad) JRF Recruitment 2026 - 1 Post

IIT (ISM) Dhanbad, one of India's oldest and most respected engineering institutes, has released a notification for 1 Junior Research Fellow post under an ANRF (SERB)-sponsored project titled "Investigations into the dynamics of the adsorption systems based on waste source-derived indigenously developed adsorbents for the carbon capture application." The project is led by Dr. Satyabrata Sahoo, Associate Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering, and is sanctioned for three years, up to October 2027 (Sanction No. SRDP 1151 G, Project No. CRG/2023/000174). This is a project-based JRF position and not a regular government job — the post ends with the project, and meeting the minimum qualification does not guarantee an interview call.

Carbon capture research is one of the fastest-growing areas of clean-energy engineering in India, and this project focuses on developing low-cost, indigenous adsorbent materials from waste sources to capture CO2 more efficiently. As a JRF on this project, you will get hands-on exposure to advanced simulation tools and experimental setups that are directly relevant to India's climate and energy goals. Engineering graduates and postgraduates who are interested in adsorption science, thermal systems, or environmental engineering research should apply.

Who Can Apply?

You can qualify for this JRF position through either of the two routes below. Both routes require you to be GATE-qualified.

Route 1: Graduate Engineers

  • Qualification: B.E./B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Metallurgical and Material Engineering with First Division
  • GATE: A valid GATE score is mandatory

Route 2: Postgraduate Engineers

  • Qualification: M.E./M.Tech in Mechanical Engineering (Thermal/Design), Chemical Engineering, or Metallurgical and Material Engineering, with First Division at both graduate and postgraduate level
  • GATE: You must be GATE-qualified

Desirable Skills

  • Knowledge of coding in MATLAB, 3D drawing in SOLIDWORKS, and analysis in COMSOL Multiphysics/Ansys Fluent is preferred
  • Exposure to high-pressure gas experiments will be an added advantage

As a JRF on this project, your day-to-day work will involve numerical and experimental investigations on heat and mass transfer modelling of adsorption systems for CO2 capture applications. You will design and develop an experimental setup, study CO2 adsorption behaviour on different indigenously developed adsorbents, run controlled experiments, and help develop activated carbon and MOF (Metal-Organic Framework) materials in the lab. Strong hands-on skills with COMSOL Multiphysics and MATLAB will help you get the most out of this position, since much of the modelling work depends on these tools. If you enjoy working at the intersection of experimental engineering and computational simulation, this role gives you a good mix of both.

Age Limit

  • You should be up to 35 years old as on 1 August 2026 (for UR candidates).
  • Age Relaxation: As per Government of India norms for SC/ST/OBC/PwBD and other reserved categories.

Salary

  • You will get a fellowship of Rs. 37,000 per month plus HRA, as per DST (Department of Science and Technology) norms.
  • This is a standard JRF fellowship rate applicable across DST/SERB-sponsored projects at IITs, and it is paid monthly for the duration you remain on the project.

Selection Process (No Written Exam)

The selection for this post is done through:

  1. Shortlisting: Candidates are shortlisted based on merit and project requirements. Meeting the minimum qualification alone does not guarantee an interview call — the Principal Investigator will screen applications against the project's specific technical needs.
  2. Interview: Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed online or in person; the exact mode and schedule will be communicated to you separately after shortlisting.

No TA/DA will be paid for attending the interview, and you must make your own arrangements for stay at Dhanbad if the interview is held in person.

How to Apply

  1. Open the Google Form link at forms.gle/ycXAYYz78TGyEoBJ7.
  2. Fill in your personal, academic, and GATE score details.
  3. Upload your required documents, such as mark sheets, degree certificates, and GATE scorecard.
  4. Review your entries carefully and submit the form before the deadline.

If you have questions about the project itself, you can reach out to the Principal Investigator, Dr. Satyabrata Sahoo, at satya@iitism.ac.in or (0326) 2235147.

Important Dates

  • Notification Date: 7 August 2026
  • Last Date to Apply: 18 August 2026 (midnight)

Responsibilities

  • Conduct numerical and experimental investigations on heat and mass transfer modelling of adsorption systems
  • Develop experimental setups to study CO2 adsorption on various adsorbents
  • Run experiments on the developed setup and record accurate results
  • Develop activated carbon and MOF (Metal-Organic Framework) materials for carbon capture
  • Use COMSOL Multiphysics and MATLAB for simulation and modelling work
  • Maintain lab records and prepare periodic research reports
  • Support the Principal Investigator with project documentation and deliverables
  • Coordinate with other lab members on experiment scheduling and equipment upkeep
