GBPNIHE Project Associate and JPF Recruitment 2026: Overview
G. B. Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment (GBPNIHE) is hiring project staff through its North-East Regional Centre (NERC), Chandranagar, Itanagar. These temporary research engagements connect wildlife conservation, high-altitude lake ecology and climate-change studies across the Himalayan region. The projects focus on different environmental questions, so your choice of role should reflect the research setting you want to work in.
Posts and Disciplines
- Project Associate-I, SBIF CONSERW: The project studies tiger landscape ecology and genetics in Northeast India. Its fieldwork links protected areas, tiger habitat and the corridors connecting those areas.
- Junior Project Fellow, NMHS: This project examines the health of Tenbawa, a high-altitude lake in the Lachung Valley of Sikkim. It connects lake ecosystems and their services with the effects of a changing climate.
- Junior Project Fellow, NATCOM: This role supports the Biennial Transparency Report on climate-change impacts in the Indian Himalayan ecosystem. The project covers risks, vulnerability, adaptation, and loss and damage.
Post-wise Duties
Project Associate-I: Tiger Landscape Project
You will collect tiger scat samples systematically in protected areas of Northeast India and coordinate with the relevant State Forest Departments. The research also examines tiger habitat associations and the connectivity between protected areas, bringing field observations into the wider landscape study.
Junior Project Fellow: Tenbawa Lake Project
You will review research on Himalayan high-altitude lakes and study their contribution to biological communities in the Lachung Valley. Your work will also examine climate-related risks and the ecosystem services these lakes provide, keeping the focus on the lake and its surrounding environment.
Junior Project Fellow: NATCOM Project
You will support field data collection, databases and scientific reporting for the Himalayan climate study. The role includes biodiversity vulnerability assessment, research on climate-friendly adaptation, data analysis, presentations and scientific publications.
Service Conditions and Caveats
- Project engagement: These appointments are temporary project positions. The institute can end an engagement without giving a reason.
- Posting: The recruitment is based at NERC, but selected staff can be posted anywhere in India. The project descriptions also involve field settings beyond the Itanagar centre.
- Joining: If selected, you should be ready to join immediately. Plan around this condition when considering your current commitments.
- Travel costs: The institute will not pay travel or daily allowances for attending the interview.
- Recruitment changes: The institute may change the number of positions, leave posts unfilled or consider applicants for a suitable position under the notice.
- Conduct and decisions: Canvassing can disqualify you. The institute's decision on the recruitment is final, and it will not handle individual correspondence disputing that decision.
