CERC Legal and Bench Officer Recruitment 2026: Overview
Central Electricity Regulatory Commission (CERC) is strengthening the legal support behind its electricity-regulation work at its New Delhi office. The notice covers senior legal leadership, mid-level legal scrutiny and bench coordination through deputation on Foreign Service terms or short-term contract. This is meant for serving officers who already understand government or public-sector systems and can move into regulatory case work without a long induction. The legal posts focus on judicial and quasi-judicial matters, while the Bench Officer role keeps hearings and case records moving smoothly.
Posts and Disciplines
- Joint Chief (Legal): the senior legal role, with responsibility for guiding complex regulatory proceedings, reviewing pleadings and supporting consistent legal positions across matters before the Commission.
- Deputy Chief (Legal): a supervisory role linking legal research, case preparation and the day-to-day handling of petitions with senior decision-makers.
- Assistant Chief (Legal): a working legal position centred on proceedings, petitions, pleadings and organised case-law support for regulatory matters.
- Bench Officer: a court-facing coordination role that supports listings, hearing records, case files and the procedural flow of matters placed before the Commission.
Post-wise Duties
Joint Chief (Legal)
You will lead the legal examination of important regulatory matters, shape case strategy and review material placed before the Commission. The role calls for sound judgement across judicial and quasi-judicial proceedings and clear guidance for the legal team.
Deputy Chief (Legal)
You will supervise petition work, check pleadings and coordinate legal inputs needed for hearings. You will also help turn regulatory questions into well-supported legal submissions that senior officers can use confidently.
Assistant Chief (Legal)
You will research case law, prepare and check petitions, organise hearing material and follow the progress of assigned matters. Your work will provide accurate legal support for ongoing proceedings and keep records ready for review.
Bench Officer
You will coordinate case listings, arrange files for the bench and track the procedural movement of matters. The post connects the registry-style workload with timely hearings and reliable case documentation.
Service Conditions and Caveats
- Tenure: the normal deputation or short-term contract period follows the tenure stated in CERC recruitment rules.
- Source organisations: serving officers may come from Central or State Governments, public sector undertakings or autonomous bodies, subject to the applicable route.
- Accommodation and medical cover: government or leased accommodation and CERC medical facilities are governed by the Commission's regulations and the option exercised by the officer.
- Parent-office clearance: your current employer must verify your particulars and confirm that you can be released if selected.
- Offer condition: declining an appointment after accepting the process can affect consideration for a later CERC appointment under the notice's conditions.
