Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani (BITS Pilani), Goa Campus is recruiting a Junior Research Fellow in the Department of Mathematics for an ANRF-PMECRG sponsored project. The role sits at the intersection of pure mathematics, quantum theory and statistical decision-making, making it suitable for a postgraduate who wants to move into focused research.

The project is titled Quickest Quantum Change-Point Detection (QQCD) and carries file number ANRF/ECRG/2025/003716/PMS. Change-point detection asks how quickly a meaningful shift can be identified from observed data. In this project, that question is studied for quantum systems, where the mathematical structure and uncertainty differ from ordinary statistical models.

Dr Tiju Cherian John is the principal investigator, and the broad research areas are operator theory, quantum theory and statistics. Your grounding in linear algebra and real analysis will support the core work, while familiarity with functional analysis, quantum mechanics or statistics gives you a route into the project's specialised questions. The assignment is research-led, so careful proofs, computation, reading and documentation will matter as much as the final result.

The project runs for three years and can help you build experience for further academic work. A selected fellow gets a chance to apply for the BITS Pilani PhD programme, subject to the normal doctoral rules. That opportunity is separate from the fellowship selection, but it makes the post especially relevant if you plan to continue in mathematical or quantum research.

Service Conditions and Caveats

• Project status: This is a research-project fellowship linked to the ANRF-PMECRG grant, not a regular institute appointment.
• Project duration: The research project is planned for three years, and your engagement remains connected to its approved work and funding.
• Accommodation: Hostel accommodation may be offered only if space is available and will follow the institute rules in force when you join.
• Interview: Only shortlisted applicants will be informed about the online interview.
