BHU Research Associate Recruitment 2026: Overview

Banaras Hindu University (BHU) is taking a Research Associate (RA-I) onto a wheat genetics project in its Department of Genetics and Plant Breeding at the Institute of Agricultural Sciences, Varanasi. The work is funded by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) under project P-07/1348, titled “Study of the Complex Genetic System for Developing a Package of R/S Genes to Breed for Spot Blotch Resistance in Bread Wheat”.

Spot blotch is a fungal disease that damages wheat in the warm, humid eastern plains, and the project is assembling a package of resistance and susceptibility genes that breeders can build on. Dr. Sandeep Sharma, Assistant Professor in the department, is the principal investigator. The post is filled through a walk-in interview at the department, so there is no shortlisting round before you meet the committee — you appear with your originals on the day and the selection happens there. It suits a plant scientist who is comfortable moving between field breeding material and a molecular biology bench.

Service Conditions and Caveats

• Purely temporary: The position is temporary and co-terminus with the project — it ends when the sanctioned project ends and carries no claim on a regular university post.
• Contract term: The appointment is made for one year to begin with. An extension is given on the strength of your performance in that first year, and the project itself is sanctioned up to December 2028.
• Funding line: The post sits on DBT project P-07/1348. Quote that reference when you check that you are reading the right notice, because the department runs several sponsored projects at the same time.
• Age reference: Your age is judged as on the date of the interview, not the day you email your papers.
• Release from a current job: If you are already employed, bring a no objection certificate from your present employer to the interview.
• Originals at the venue: The notice asks you to come with all original certificates supporting your qualification and experience. Copies alone will not do on the day.
• Travel: No TA/DA is paid for attending the interview, so the trip to Varanasi is at your own cost.
