IITH Faculty Recruitment 2026: Overview

Indian Institute of Technology Hyderabad (IITH) has opened its regular faculty recruitment drive for Assistant Professor (Grade-II and Grade-I), Associate Professor and Professor posts across 16 departments. Set up in 2008, IITH is ranked 7th among Indian engineering institutes in NIRF 2025, and it now has more than 355 faculty and 6,000 students.

The drive is open to Indian nationals, PIOs and OCIs, and foreign nationals can also apply at every level, though they are appointed on contract for up to five years. New faculty get a seed grant to start their research right after joining, plus relocation support and a professional development allowance. Women candidates are especially encouraged to apply.

Posts and Disciplines

You apply at one of four levels, decided mainly by your post-PhD experience:

• Assistant Professor Grade-II: for PhD holders with less than three years of post-PhD experience, including fresh PhDs. You can move up to Grade-I after an internal review once you have the experience.
• Assistant Professor Grade-I: for candidates with at least three years of post-PhD teaching, research or industry experience.
• Associate Professor: needs six years of post-PhD experience, three of them at Assistant Professor (Level-12) or an equivalent level.
• Professor: needs ten years of post-PhD experience, four of them as Associate Professor at an IIT, IISc, IIM, IISER or a reputed foreign university. Bhatnagar awardees and INSA, INAE, IAS or NASI fellows with an exceptional record can also apply.

The departments and their areas of interest this round:

• Artificial Intelligence: NLP, graph ML, geometric deep learning, AI systems, AI in finance and safety of agentic systems; your PhD and postdoc must be in AI/ML.
• Biomedical Engineering: medical instrumentation, robotics, brain-machine interfaces, neurotechnology and imaging. Biomaterials, tissue engineering and nanomedicine are not considered this round.
• Biotechnology: vaccine biology, cell and gene therapy, and AI in biology and health.
• Chemical Engineering: AI/ML for chemical engineering, electrochemical engineering, process control, critical minerals and pharmaceutical engineering; a B.Tech/BE in Chemical Engineering is a must.
• Chemistry: LLMs and robotic chemistry, ultrafast spectroscopy of quantum materials, and chemical process technology.
• Climate Change: ocean modelling, climate model development, aerosol-climate interactions and climate extremes.
• Civil Engineering: transportation engineering only, with a B.Tech/BE in Civil Engineering.
• Computer Science and Engineering: algorithms, AI/ML, vision, cryptography, cybersecurity, cloud, quantum computing and semiconductors. Exceptional picks get an endowment-funded salary top-up in their first year.
• Design: product, interaction, visual and service design, photography, film and animation.
• Electrical Engineering: communications and signal processing, microelectronics and VLSI, power electronics and power systems, and systems and control.
• Entrepreneurship and Management: startups, entrepreneurial finance and marketing, strategy, HR and business analytics.
• Liberal Arts: economics, cognitive science, public policy and science-technology-society studies.
• Mathematics: theoretical computer science only — algorithms, data structures and complexity theory.
• Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering: robotics.
• Materials Science and Metallurgical Engineering, and Physics: advanced alloys, energy and functional materials; high energy, condensed matter, optics, astrophysics and quantum technologies.

Service Conditions and Caveats

• Cross-department work: You may be affiliated with two more departments, teaching about 2 credits there on top of roughly 6 credits a year in your own department.
• Shortlisting: Meeting the minimum qualification does not guarantee an interview; departments shortlist on research, publications and their own needs.
• Publication list: Show the impact factor and quartile (Q1, Q2…) of every journal you list.
• Earlier applicants: If you applied in the last two years, point out how your CV has improved since then.
• Foreign passport holders: Need political and security clearance from the Ministries of External Affairs and Home Affairs.
• Interview travel: If called for an in-person interview, you get economy airfare within India, booked only through Balmer Lawrie, Ashoka Travels or IRCTC.

Apply only through the IITH online faculty portal; hard copies and emailed applications are not accepted. Submit a separate application for each department you want, and upload all certificates, including your PhD defence date.
