About This Job

The Legislative Department under the Ministry of Law & Justice is hiring 2 Proof Readers at New Delhi on a deputation / absorption basis. Legislative Department Proof Reader Recruitment 2026 - 2 Posts

The Legislative Department, Ministry of Law & Justice, Government of India has issued Vacancy Circular No. A.35021/2/2025-Admn. I(LD) dated 29 April 2026 to fill up two vacancies of Proof Reader. One vacancy is by deputation and the other is by deputation/absorption. The post belongs to General Central Service, Group 'C' (Non-Gazetted, Ministerial). Selected candidates will work at Kartavya Bhawan in New Delhi and handle proof reading of legislative documents in English.

Who Can Apply?

You must be working on a regular basis in a similar or equivalent grade in Central Government offices or Government Presses. The post requires:

Essential Qualifications

  • Education: A Degree from a recognised University incorporated under a Central, Provincial or State Act, or any institution deemed to be a University.
  • Experience: Minimum 5 years of experience in Printing work in English at the Ministry of Law and Justice, any Central or State Government Press, any other press, or a Newspaper office.
  • Test: You should be able to qualify in a departmental test in English Proof Reading.

Desirable Qualification

  • A degree in Law from a recognised University.

Other Conditions

  • Departmental officers in the feeder category in the direct line of promotion are not eligible for deputation.
  • Deputationists are not eligible for promotion to this post.

Age Limit

  • Maximum age for appointment by deputation: 56 years as on the closing date of receipt of applications.
  • Period of deputation (including any previous deputation in another ex-cadre post) shall ordinarily not exceed 3 years.

Salary

  • Pay Level: Level 5 of 7th CPC Pay Matrix
  • Pay Scale: Rs. 29,200 - Rs. 92,300 per month
  • You will also get DA, HRA, TA and other allowances as per Central Government rules.

Selection Process

There is no written exam. Selection is on deputation / absorption basis:

  1. Screening of Applications: Applications routed through proper channel are screened for eligibility.
  2. Document Verification: Bio-data (Annexure-I), APARs for last 5 years, Integrity Certificate, Vigilance Clearance and Cadre Clearance are verified.
  3. Departmental Test in English Proof Reading: Selected candidates must qualify a departmental test.
  4. Final Selection: Based on suitability, qualifications and work experience.

Responsibilities

  • Proof read English drafts of Bills, Acts, Statutory Orders, Notifications, and other legislative documents
  • Compare printer's proofs with the original manuscript and mark corrections accurately
  • Check grammar, spelling, punctuation, formatting, and consistency in legal English text
  • Coordinate with the Drafting Officers and Government of India Presses for finalisation of proofs
  • Maintain records of proofs, revisions, and final printed versions of legislative publications
  • Verify cross-references, citations, and tabular data in legislative documents
  • Assist in proof reading of Vidhi Sahitya Prakashan publications when required
